The aim of DT at Scarning Primary School is to inspire children’s interest in how the world around them works: to question, enquire, explore, innovate, risk take and reason about real life problems and to solve these as engineers, designers, chefs and architects. Children learn knowledge and skills in a progressive curriculum that supports them in building and applying a repertoire of technical knowledge, understanding and skills. They develop skills for life by designing and making products with purpose for a wide range of users which encourages their creativity, imagination, analytical thinking, practical and evaluation skills, with all projects following a ‘design, make and evaluate’ cycle.
Scarning Primary School has the advantage of an expansive, stimulating environment and surroundings that inspire and support our DT projects. Our large grounds (which include an amphitheatre and bird hide) provide ample space for children to work outside of the classroom and promote creativity. Fruit trees, blackberry bushes and a large vegetable patch provide children with fresh, seasonal ingredients, educating them first hand in the ‘field to fork’ process.
At Scarning Primary School we encourage cross curriculum teaching, whereby children experience an understanding of how learning links across a range of subjects. The teaching of DT contributes significantly to the teaching of Science, Maths, Computing and Art and children are encouraged to make connections in their learning along the way.
