Our history curriculum at Scarning is sequenced to give pupils a sense of chronology, but is also carefully structured so that comparisons can be made to different periods and civilisations throughout history. In KS1, teaching is structured so that pupils really gain a sense of what history is. Pupils make comparisons with the modern day across a range of topics, including toys in Y1 and flight in Y2. Teaching ensures pupils develop key skills such as describing, identifying, comparing and reasoning. In KS2 we really embrace a sense of chronology while comparing civilisations that co-existed at similar periods, but different localities across the world. Y3 undertake two studies of early, ancient civilisations: the Stone Age in Britain, and the Ancient Egyptians. In Y4, the curriculum looks at a progressive history of Britain, from the Roman invasion in 753BC, to the Anglo Saxon era, paired with the invasion of the Vikings and introduction of the Norman Invasion in 1066. Y5 return to a study of the two ancient civilisations with a study of how the Mayan's changed how they lived. This is followed by a study of the Ancient Greeks and the achievements they made that influenced our modern world. In Y6, our pupils then undertake a study of modern history, looking at how the sources they use as historians differ from those explored from earlier periods of history.Throughout KS2, pupils begin working on higher order skills. We ask our pupils to use sources and information to make their own reasoned judgements and speculations, and this is at the heart of our teaching approach. Each unit of study is scaffolded around a central key question that is answered by the pupils at the end of a study. This way, pupils can see how each element of knowledge contributes to a greater understanding of a bigger concept. By Year 6, we expect that our pupils will be able to evaluate and critique sources, as well as make their own hypothesises. Summarising ideas and articulating theories is another key element of the learning that takes place at our school as we want our pupils to be the historians and geographers- we want our pupils to drive the learning as they make speculations from sources before coming together with the class teacher and exploring theories in more detail.
