Intent:At Scarning V C Primary School, we believe learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an important opening to other cultures. We want to broaden our children’s perspective of the world and provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries as a global citizen. Our intent is to provide a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. All pupils will be expected to achieve their full potential by encouraging high expectations and excellent standards in their foreign language learning. We want to foster students’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar, necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning - the aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond key stage 2. Implementation:Our MFL curriculum is designed to develop not only our children’s language skills, but also their love of learning a language. All classes will have access to a high-quality French curriculum using the Twinkl scheme of work and resources which have been adapted to fit our children. This will progressively develop pupil skills through regularly taught and well-planned lessons in across KS2 which will be taught by a combination of a specialist language teacher and their normal class teacher. This allows the children the benefit of being taught by a specialist, whilst also having the language regularly reinforced, developed and embedded by their class teacher in between. It also means they will have access to native speaker sound files through Twinkl to support non-specialist teachers, as well as hearing a fluent French speaker in person. Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language. The units of work ensure development is progressive as they build on previous knowledge and skills from units already studied. This allows the children to acquire new language then use and apply it in a range of different scenarios and topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As their confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. Impact:The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils: · understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources · speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation · can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt · discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied. Our MFL curriculum will ensure all pupils embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar in relation to these key language learning skills, as well as develop a love of languages and an awareness and understanding of other cultures. Through the progressive nature of the curriculum, they will learn and importantly retain, the foundations of language learning. Pupils will continuously build on their previous knowledge as they progress through the primary phase. Previous language will be revised, recalled and consolidated whenever possible and appropriate. This will equip them with the skills to continue their language learning into KS3 and beyond.By using the units provided, the native speaker sound clips, and by working alongside the specialist teacher, non-specialist teachers will be supported to deliver high quality lessons and the whole school long term overview will ensure that all teachers will have a clear understanding of what they are working towards. The majority of children in each year group will be working at or above the expected level for their age. (At the end of each unit, and each academic year, the teacher will carry out assessment linked to the progression in skills document). In addition, it is the intended impact that the children:· are inspired by the MFL Curriculum and want to learn more.· show the progression in their skills, knowledge and understanding in the work in their books.· can discuss their learning and remember what they have learnt.· learn about the country France and what it is like to live in this country.· Have Fun!
