In the words of the well-known artist and illustrator Quentin Blake “Art & Design is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise: with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality.” In our school we want children to develop their own artistic ideas, beliefs, values and knowledge, encouraging them to explore their imagination, express themselves freely and develop an individual style. The Art curriculum at Scarning is designed to encourage our children to look at the world from an artist’s viewpoint, observing line, form and colour all around them. Ensuring that they develop an aesthetic appreciation of their surroundings, including both natural and manufactured objects.Art is taught by combining discrete lessons alongside a broader thematic approach. We believe this benefits the pupils by enabling us to directly teach specific key skills eg. Portrait drawing, proportion and perspective whilst also allowing them to link Art to other strands of learning; using it as a way to explore, connect, interpret and represent a wide range of topics and themes. We aim to familiarise the children with a cross section of art forms from a number of different artists, craftspeople and designers encompassing different cultures, eras, genres, styles and traditions. We encourage children in all age groups to investigate and use a wide variety of materials and techniques, thereby acquiring new skills. At the end of a creative project the children are asked to reflect on key questions which promote children being able to critically appraise their own work and link their endeavours to those of other artists.
