The thinking behind the Key Concept Threads is to develop core concepts that will underpin much the knowledge being learnt throughout the school across the curriculum- from the Early Years to Y6. By ensuring repetition of key vocabulary and concepts, alongside the identification and exploration of links to other topics and subjects, pupils’ memories will be enhanced and retrieval of knowledge, facts and ideas will be stronger.
Pupils will also understand that while learning can be broken into different subjects and disciplines, ideas, themes and concepts will often be theorised and studied in different ways. Knowledge about the universe for example can be very scientific, but it should also be studied from a religious perspective, as well as celebrated as a concept for inspiring works of art and music.
Ultimately, we want our pupils to be able to talk about these ideas (schemas) in detail, making links to the different units of study across different year groups and topics.
As well as this, Mr King and Mr Howell will explore concepts through the lecture programme by taking one of the core concepts a half term starting with ‘conflict’ in December 2019. The idea will be that a pupil in Y3 will have participated in a lecture for every ‘Concept Thread’ by the time they leave Y6.
