NRHS Boys Varsity Basketball Team Dominates; Wins Section One Championships
By Lea Cohen
For the first time in 12 years, the New Rochelle Boys Varsity Basketball team earned their spot as Section One Champions, and further, made it to the regional championship final. On March 9th, 2025, New Rochelle faced off against North Rockland in the Section 1 Class AAA Championship game. They had just beat Scarsdale 52-49 in the semifinal game in order to advance this far. Their season record this year ended up at 18-6.
The last time New Rochelle had won the Section One championship was back in 2013, making this their first win in over ten years. Although the Huguenots had made it to the same championship game last year, they lost their lead to Mount Vernon in just the final minutes of the game. This year, New Rochelle remained ahead for almost all of the game, taking a fairly smooth and easy championship win over North Rockland. The game was played at the Westchester County Center, where tickets were sold for $10 each, bringing in lots of fans on each side of the game. A large New Rochelle fan section was placed right behind one hoop, where many students showed up in New Rochelle merchandise to cheer on their school team. The New Rochelle Huguenots ended North Rockland’s 11-game winning streak during their season in taking the championship title from them. Standouts for New Rochelle are Co-captains Malik Gasper and Justin Cohen. Bryce Seward, a sophomore, also made important plays on the court. Gasper, the tallest player on the team at 6 foot 8, worked heavy defense and was able to bring in 16 total points through many high-pressure two-point inside shots. Izaiah Augustine scored 6 points, and Bryce Seward brought in 14 points.

New Rochelle was elated to celebrate their championship win on the court, carrying the trophy all together. Head coach Rasaun Young did a great job commanding the players throughout the game.
The Huguenots won their next game–the regional semifinals–against Corning Painted Post 64-51. The New Rochelle season ended against Newburgh Free Academy in a 56-44 loss, New Rochelle put up an intense fight as Gasper scored 18 points and Seward added 9. Although the third quarter pressure from the Huguenots wasn’t quite enough to defeat the Goldbacks, the New Rochelle boys varsity basketball team has had a far beyond banner-worthy season this year, and will be returning home with a gold ball to celebrate.
