The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the history and background of the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program to include the NJROTC’s mission, goals, and policies. This course seeks to energize middle school participants for follow-on participation in the high school NJROTC curriculum.
This course is also designed to engender a sound appreciation for the heritage and traditions of the United States Navy and develop in each cadet a growing sense of pride in his/her organization, associates, and self. All elements of instruction for this course are pursued at an introductory level and practiced at orientation trips and field trips to military bases and camps around the United States and through drill competitions hosted by other NJROTC high schools within the NJROTC Area 3 region.
Course content will include: Introduction to the NJROTC program; U.S. Navy core values (honor, courage, commitment); foundational documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. constitution; the branches and roles of the U.S. government; the students' role as responsible citizens of the United States; instruction in NJROTC uniform composition, regulations, uniform appearance, and requirements for earning ribbon and awards; rank structure within the U.S. military and chain of command; introduction to military drill; customs, courtesies, and ceremonies; introduction to physical fitness and sound exercise programs; safety fundamentals.
