A Terrible True Tale: LSD
A message to my students:
When I was a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, a terrible thing happened on campus. A young man decided to take drugs with harrowing consequences. I’ll let you read the story below to find out more.
This young man’s father was a writer for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. He usually wrote a humorous column, but not on this occasion. The article was reprinted in the Badger Herald (our campus newspaper). The article really had an impact on me when I first read it- so much so that I actually saved the issue (if you’d like, I could show it to you some time). This article made me think twice before experimenting with drugs because after reading it, I had a deeper sense of how my actions might affect people that I care about. At that time, I had no idea that I’d one day be teaching about the dangers of drug use and sharing this article with my students.
Although it is sad, I hope it has a positive impact on you. It's been many years, and I still weep when I read it.

Another heart-wrenching article from the Chicago Tribune in 2015: ‘Kids just like most of you’: Mother who lost 2 sons on the same day warns students, parents about alcohol and opioids. Let's be especially wise to the fact that ALCOHOL AND OPIOIDS ARE A DEADLY MIX!

TAKE THE SURVEY: The Grit Survey was created by Angela Duckworth, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania. The survey asks 12 questions to estimate how much grit, or resilience, you show. Take the survey and then reflect on your score.
