Updates

5/22/2020

6th Grade Graduation- If you are a 6th grade student’s parent/guardian, you should’ve received a detailed letter from your respective teacher earlier this week. We will be hosting a virtual ceremony for our 6th graders moving on to middle school, and will broadcast this virtual ceremony on Wednesday 5/27 at 12pm on our Nimitz COVID Parent Resource Page (bit.ly/NESCOVIDParentResourceSite). Along with that, students and families will be welcome to take a picture in front of the 6th grade graduation banner between 9-11am on Wednesday, as well. Details can also be found on our Nimitz COVID Page.

Registration Time Change- Due to the graduation drive-thru event, we will be pushing back our registration times for May 27th to 12pm-2pm. However, moving forward, new student registration will occur between 8:30am and 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout Friday May 29th and the entire summer. If you are coming to register, please come with a mask and observe the social distancing rules when you arrive.

Military Spouse Appreciation Week- Our Military Family Life Counselors and School Liaison Officers would like you to be aware of Military Spouse Appreciation Week, from May 25th through May 29th. Please see these fliers regarding the week's events, and a community Zoom session if you are interested.

Leftover Student Belongings- Thank you to those of you who came out to pick up your child’s belongings at our designated days and times. Please let us know if you haven’t picked up your items, so we can arrange a future date and time for those pickups.

Yearbooks- Yearbooks continue to be delayed, once they arrive we will send out information regarding a pick up. If you will be moving over the summer please email Norma Sosa at nsosa@nimitzeagle.k12.hi.us for information.

Spring Pictures- Spring Pictures are still delayed for Four Classrooms: Mrs. Bongo, Mrs. Apana, Ms. Arakaki, and Ms. Alama's. We apologize deeply for this inconvenience and as soon as they arrive we will send out information regarding parent pick up.

Nimitz Safety Patrol- Applications and training will start when we return to school. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Norma Sosa at nsosa@nimitzeagle.k12.hi.us.

5/15/2020

Property Return- If you are in possession of NES property (books, supplies, devices), you must return them prior to the end of the school year. In addition to the belonging pickup beginning May 19th (please see update below), there will be a drop off station at the front office for such items.

Spring Pictures- Picture packets were distributed at the Packet Pick up on Monday, May 4, 2020. Pictures that did not get picked up were given to teachers to place in student belongings for next week's pick up. There are 4 classrooms that did not arrive which include: Ms. Alama, Ms. Arakaki, Mrs. Bongo and Mrs. Apana's classes. LifeTouch, the photography company, is aware and we should receive them soon. Ms. Sosa will be in touch with these classroom’s parents if they arrive after next week's pick up. 6th Grade panoramic pictures have also not been delivered yet, as they were delayed due to Covid-19. Ms. Sosa will be in touch with these classroom’s parents when they arrive. If you are missing pictures, or there is a problem with your order, please email nsosa@nimitzeagle.k12.hi.us.

Yearbooks- Yearbooks are sadly still delayed. LifeTouch is working diligently through all the closures, but due to low manning much of their production has been slowed down. As a reminder, the deadline for purchasing was March 13, 2020 and then it was extended to Mid April. At this time, there is a waiting list that you can be placed on, but cannot guarantee you a book. If you would like to be placed on the list, please email your student's name, grade/homeroom, parent name, phone number at nsosa@nimitzeagle.k12.hi.us.

Summer PCS/Moving- If you will be moving over the summer and have not notified the office, please do so immediately or fill out the NES Summer PCS survey. This information is very important for us to know as we have many procedures to follow for student withdrawal and preparing for next school year. If you are moving and have purchased pictures or a yearbook, please email nsosa@nimitzeagle.k12.hi.us to discuss possible shipping options.

New Student Registration- As some of you have been inquiring, student registration will be commencing soon. From 8am to 2:30pm on May 27th and May 29th, we will be taking in person registrations. More details on how this will be carried out will be coming in following updates.

Final Packet Pickup and Website Update- As noted in earlier updates, 5/18-5/22 will close out the final week of distance learning for our teachers. At that point, teachers will be tasked with close out procedures such as the finalizing and delivery of report cards. After our final website update, our final packet pickup will be on Monday between 9-11am. As before, the pickup is also designated for library book drop offs or the return of any other property. With that said, please do not request your student belongings at this time, as they will not be available on Monday.

5/8/2020

Distance Learning Concludes on May 22nd- As what would normally happen in a traditional setting, teachers will begin to ramp down instruction and officially close their gradebooks prior to the official end of the school year. This is necessary to provide teachers time to input grades for report cards. The NES administration has decided this day to be May 22nd. By extension, this means our final packet pickup day and distance learning website update will be on May 18th.

Report Cards to be sent on May 28th- Supplementing the previous update, teachers will be tasked with emailing report cards home to you electronically. You can expect your child’s report card with End of Year grades by May 28th.

The Nimitz ES Variety Show!- Despite our current situation, our Music Teacher Ms. Holladay was able to carry out a virtual version of our Nimitz ES Variety Show. If you can, please take the time to visit the newly created Variety Show section of our Nimitz COVID Parent Resource Page to see some awesome performances by some of our NES students.

Packet Pickup and Website Updates- Per newly found tradition, we will be continuing our packet pickups this coming Monday (5/11) between 9am and 11am. You may have received updates that supplements this one regarding textbook pickups and lunch refund retrieval that coincides with our packet pickup. Please let the attendant know of the specific items that you are there for.

5/1/2020

Packet Pickup 5/4- Per usual, we will be conducting our routine packet pickup on Monday (5/4) between 9am-11am. With that said you may also utilize this time to…

  • Drop off Library Books- If your child has borrowed a book from the Nimitz Library, please return them.

  • Drop off Teacher Gifts for Teacher Appreciation Week- However, please make sure you label your items. Also, please do not leave perishables as we cannot guarantee they will be received in a timely manner.

  • Pick up MOMC Shirts- We still have some Purple Up shirts that were not picked up last Monday. Please come and get them, or you may arrange a different time for pick up.

Pictures and Yearbooks- We have received many requests and questions about pictures and yearbooks. While we have made progress with picture deliveries, we are still experiencing significant difficulties with the completion of the order. Yearbooks have also been delayed, and we are awaiting their arrival. Both yearbooks and pictures are being coordinated by Ms. Sosa our PCNC, and you can reach out to her with your questions at nsosa@nimitzeagle.k12.hi.us. However it should be said that yearbook orders are officially closed.

Lunch Refunds- For students with positive funds in their meal account that will not be continuing on at Nimitz Elementary for the SY 20-21, we will issue a meal account refund. We will begin processing refunds towards the end of May for those exiting our school after May 31, 2020. In the coming weeks we will send out another email with pickup instructions for those that will be receiving a meal account refund. If you have questions regarding lunch related items, please reach out to Jodi Bertelsman at Jodi.Bertelsman@k12.hi.us.

PCS & Moving Survey- As stated in an earlier email, we have had difficulties in gaining information about families who are planning to leave before next school year, or early next school year. If you are planning on moving out of Nimitz ES boundaries between now and September 2020, please click the link provided to let us know. If plans change, especially with news about PCS movements changing every day, please notify us or your teacher as soon as possible.

4/28/2020

Given the official notice of school closure on 4/17/20 until the end of the school year, new guidance has been provided regarding carrying out the rest of the school year in our distance learning environment. Some of the guidance has been made in regards to how the End of Year grades will be given.

End of Year Grades will be based on Q1-3 grades. If you have concerns about your child's current level of mastery, please reach out to your respective teacher to discuss opportunities in distance learning available for your child to improve his/her End of Year Grade. Please understand there are only a few weeks of instruction left, therefore teachers may have to prioritize specific subject areas to target for your child.

This announcement has been made to provide equity of learning for ALL students and opportunities for students to prepare for the transition to the next grade level. If students choose not to participate, the teacher will hold students harmless and not penalize students by lowering Q1-3 grades or End of Year grades. No 4th quarter grade will be given. Only End of Year grades will be provided.

4/27/2020

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, and school closure until the end of the school year, we have not been able to complete our original process of gaining information on PCS movements and summer moves through the blue cards that were sent home prior to Spring Break.

Please fill out this survey if you have plans to move out of our school boundaries between now through September 2020.

4/24/2020

Website Updates & Packet Pickup- Keeping up with the usual routine, we will be updating the COVID Parent Resources Page (bit.ly/NESCOVIDParentResourceSite) with a new week of distance learning. Please check on your respective grade level and resource pages to see the updates. Printable packets will be available for pickup between 9am and 11am on Monday (4/27). Again, please stay in your vehicle as you drive up to the attendants.

Kindergarten Packet Mess Up- In regards to packet pickups, we realize we did not apologize for the recent gaffe on the printouts last week. We are very sorry for the inconvenience that caused, and we are thankful for all of you who returned to pick up the second packet.

MOMC Shirts- After a bit of delay, our Month of the Military Child shirts have been officially delivered. If you have ordered a shirt, Ms. Sosa should have already reached out to you regarding pick up. Shirts will be available for pickup on Monday (4/27) between 9am and 11am.

Library Books- As the year is officially closed, many of you have inquired about library book returns. At this point in time, we can officially say we are accepting library book returns on our 9am-11am window on Monday as well.

Bus Refunds- Lastly, some of you have inquired about refunds on your bus transportation accounts. We have been informed that refunds will be given for left over money, and you can expect that in the mail some time in the near future.

4/20/2020

During the pickup time on 4/20, it was discovered that there was a large discrepancy in the printing of the Kindergarten GenEd Packet for Week 4/20-4/24.

Due to this issue, the packet time for 4/20 will be extended until 12pm in order for Kindergarten parents/guardians to come back and retrieve the new packet (star in the right hand corner to signify new packet). If parents/guardians cannot come back to pickup the new packet, then they may come between 9am-11am on Tuesday (4/21) or Thursday (4/23). There will be someone on standby in the office to greet you in the driveway.

Please check with your respective teachers for questions or more information.

4/17/2020

As we move into Week 4 of our distance learning, we hope you are all staying healthy and safe. If you have not received the news yet, Superintendent Kishimoto has announced (as of 4/17), that school campuses will remain closed until May 28. Not only does this mean that our distance learning program will continue for the remainder of the school year, but that many questions will probably rise about how the closure will be conducted. We want to assure you that those questions are on our mind as well, and we will do our best to bring you answers to those questions as quickly as possible.

Despite this announcement, our teachers have continued their hard work to maintain a routine of weekly updates to our NES COVID Parent Resource Website (bit.ly/NESCOVIDParentResourceSite). You should expect updates on every grade level and resource page over the weekend, going into Monday (4/20).

With that said, our next packet pickup will be on Monday (4/20) between 9am and 11am. Please know that some grade levels have moved their distance learning activities completely online. It is important you check with your child’s respective teachers to be sure if a packet pickup is necessary.

Lastly, we would like to remind you that we are taking photo entries for our Month of Military Child. Some students have already posted their pics to the newly created MOMC section of the Nimitz COVID Parent Resource Website (bit.ly/NESMOMC). If your child is interested in showing off their military pride, please visit the Nimitz COVID PCNC WebPage (bit.ly/NimitzCOVIDPCNCPage) for information.

4/10/2020

On Monday (4/13), we will be conducting our next packet pickup between 9am and 11am at the front driveway. Again, we want to remind parents that you should not come to the office on foot as we are doing our best to limit physical contact and adhere to social distancing. Please drive up to the driveway, and wait for an attendant to see you at your car window.

As we continue our distance learning, our grade levels have done well to assess student and household ability to carry out online activities. By the following week (4/20), general education work in Grades 4, 5, and 6 will be completely online. This will minimize printing and pickup needs as we move forward.

The Nimitz Parents COVID Resource Website (https://bit.ly/NESCOVIDParentResourceSite) will also be fully updated for next week’s material by the end of Monday (4/13). However, you will see those updates popping up sporadically beginning today (4/10).

One particular update is our PCNC’s effort to keep some of our activities going in social distancing fashion. With April being the Month of the Military Child, Ms. Sosa is receiving photos of Nimitz students showing their military pride to be shared on the website with the rest of our community. If you are interested in this, please visit the PCNC Page of the website (bit.ly/NimitzCOVIDPCNCPage).

4/6/2020

Please see our April Newsletter for updates on our continued school closure, the Month of the Military Child, and other important information.

4/4/2020

We hope everything has been going well on your end. A lot of the teachers have reported that they are happy to see you still in contact and maintaining your children’s education. As we continue our distance learning into a second week, we wanted to make sure you were updated with the latest information.

This coming Tuesday 4/7, we will be holding our second packet pickup between 9am and 11am. As before, this is reserved for parents who have indicated that they do not have a working printer at home. However, we do understand that some of you have asked to change your status. With that said, please make sure your respective teachers are aware of this, as we want to keep our resource use to a minimum and all of our safety to a maximum.

In order to make our distance learning more efficient, especially with parents now being an integral part of this new system, each grade level and resource teacher has been assigned to create a schedule for you to follow. Please keep in mind that this schedule is not strict, nor is it (or it’s assignments) connected to any type of grade. However, it is a suggestion as to how you can manage the tasks throughout the week. These new schedules will begin showing over the weekend and will be complete by the end of Monday 4/6. Every schedule will factor a start on Tuesday (since our previous instructions were to return to school by 4/7), and a Good Friday holiday on 4/10.

Lastly, our PCNC Ms. Sosa is still working to keep some of our activities going, despite the change in scenery. Be on the lookout for announcements regarding Month of the Military Child and other opportunities to share your distance learning experiences with the rest of the community on our Update page and our PCNC Information page.

3/27/2020

Much of the information in the Distance Learning section of the website is printable as some documents would normally be passed out in a classroom. With classrooms being inaccessible at the moment, we reached out to all of you to see what capabilities you had in regards to your Wifi system, device usage, and printing operations. With regards to home printing difficulties, some of you elected to pick up printed items at Nimitz Elementary School. With that said, we will be holding a packet pick up time on Monday, March 30, 2020 from 9am to 11am at the Nimitz Elementary School front office driveway.

This will be reserved for parents who elected to pick up printed items at Nimitz Elementary on the parent survey that was given earlier in the week. Our resources are limited, and we want to keep the safety of our staff, AND YOU, in mind. If you have the ability to print at home, PLEASE DO SO.

Should you choose to come to campus, there will be a group of staff members waiting for you in the driveway to bring your documents. Please stay in your car and verbally ask a staff member to bring the documents for your child’s respective grade level. They will hand them to you, and you may drive away. Staff members will be using safety precautions such as wearing rubber gloves and sanitizing their area continuously throughout the pick up times. Lastly, some teachers may have reached out to you with more specific information regarding these enrichment activities, and/or what type of documents to pick up. Please let us know if there are preferences you have established with your respective teacher when you come to school. We will be aware of them.

3/24/2020

As of today, Superintendent Kishimoto has declared all HIDOE schools closed for normal operations until at least 4/30/20. More details can be found in this letter provided by the Superintendent's Office.

3/22/2020

Given these challenging times, we at Nimitz Elementary think it is important to reach out to determine whether our families have access to tools that would allow for distance learning should school closure be extended past 4/7/20. If you have not done so already, please take time to fill out this form for your child(ren) that go to Nimitz Elementary.

IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD, PLEASE SUBMIT ONE RESPONSE FOR EACH CHILD YOU HAVE AT NIMITZ ES.

3/20/2020

During the extended closure, HIDOE will continue to provide student meals, including providing grab-and-go breakfast and lunch at select schools to children 18 years and under at the following days and times:

  • Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. for breakfast.

  • Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for lunch.

  • Note: Meals will not be served on Thursday, March 26 in observance of Prince Kuhio Day. Some schools may start serving meals later in the week.

Nimitz students who may utilize this program are recommended to pick up their meals at Makalapa Elementary School. More information can be found here.

3/19/2020

As of 3/19, the governor and Hawaii DOE ordered all public school campuses are to be closed until 4/7/2020. More details are to come. A press conference from the governor detailing this closure will be broadcasted at 3pm today (3/19/2020) on major news outlets.
