Accounting is recommended for any student considering a college business or marketing major. Accounting is often referred to as the "language of business." Along with mastering the basic principles of accounting, the students will learn how advanced accounting systems/concepts are used in various types of business. If you liked Accounting, you’ll love this course. This one semester course reviews the procedures learned in accounting then goes into accounting procedures for a corporation. A project or practice set will be completed as well as an introduction to computerized Accounting with application problems learned in the course.

Everyone in our society comes in contact with businesses from the purchase of retail items; such as shoes and cars to special commodities; such as stocks. By taking this course the student will become better informed on many practical matters; such as, satisfying basic needs, saving and investing, learning how business is organized, the role of business in our society and our relationship to business, the banking system including personal accounts, the use of credit, and how to be a wise consumer.

Computer Essentials 1 - (#180)

This course (if taken with Computer Essentials 2) qualifies for Transcripted Credit through MPTC. 

In this class, you will learn the essential business production software that many employers require. Reinforce your keyboarding skills, learn appropriate ways to format various documents (reports, tables, and correspondence), improve proofreading and editing skills, create digital presentations, create simple spreadsheets and charts, and investigate careers. Explore Google applications such as Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentation as well as desktop publishing. The course is also infused with file management, ethical use of technology, & working efficiently.

Computer Essentials 2 - (#181)

½ Credit (offered Semester 2 only)

Prerequisite:  Computer Essentials 1 (or teacher approval). This course (if taken with Computer Essentials 1) qualifies for Transcripted Credit through MPTC (students will need to earn a C or better to qualify for MPTC credit). 

Learn how to use software commonly used for personal and business use. You will develop skill in preparing advanced spreadsheets and databases (Excel), creating digital media and using advanced word processing functions (Word). Students will have the chance to take the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exams (on MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) to showcase your skills for future employers. You will also be introduced to databases and database management (MS Access). You’ll tackle some desktop publishing tasks including digital photo editing, ad copy layout techniques, and also become confident and versed in using Google Docs as an alternative to Microsoft Office.

This class will be responsible for production of the yearbook. The students will be the editors of the yearbook and will be responsible for all phases of the yearbook. This includes page layout and design, photographing events, yearbook sales, and advertising sales. 

GRiT - Relational Intelligence & Leadership - (#176)

GRiT (formally titled Mindset Matters) is an opportunity to focus on your personal development as a leader, in whatever capacity that may be, as well as creating a positive change in our school and community. The course will focus on themes of your emotional intelligence, attitude, character development; mental, interpersonal, and soft skills. You will have the opportunity to level up your physical and mental health. Whether you are looking to lead at home, work, or on the field, GRiT will help you become a powerful version of your own best self.

Oriole TV - (#165)

This is an independent course of an elite team of video production students (approximately four to seven students) that will plan, produce, edit, and publish the daily Oriole TV news for Horace Mann High School and the School District of North Fond du Lac. Students wishing to be in this team will need to interview for the “job” prior to being placed in the class. Students in this team commit to producing a quality, innovative daily news production that represents themselves and the school district well. Jobs in Oriole TV may include: Lead Anchors, Weather Anchor, Sports Anchor, Field Reporter, Lead Camera, Lead Editor, Field Camera & Support. 

Oriole Outfitters (Business Management) - (#168)

Earn money while in school! Students in this class will manage the Oriole Outfitters. This unique, job-based course is designed for you if you are interested in a marketing/business career. As a select group of managers (approximately 4 -5 students) of two school-based operations, you will receive hands-on experiences in a retail and management environment. Students will interview for admission into this class. Management roles and duties in the class include general manager, merchandising manager, sales and promotions manager, and financial manager. This is a project/application-based class in which individual efforts and teamwork are utilized. This class will benefit you if you are interested in continued education at a technical or four-year college for business training as well as entering the workforce. 

Personal Financial Management - (#158)

This class is a requirement for graduation. 

This is a practical business course designed to help students in their personal life. Topics covered will be payroll, investments including the stock market, income taxes, health, life and auto insurance, house mortgage, credit, making savvy purchases, developing a personal budget, and career and academic planning. The purpose of this class is to prepare you to be a smart consumer and to help you successfully transition to managing your own money. 

Principles of Management (Independent Study) - (#1682)

Principles of Management is an independent study course that teaches management principles to the business leaders of tomorrow by weaving three threads of strategy, entrepreneurship and active leadership. This class can be scheduled any hour of the day that is convenient for the student. Check-ins between the student and teacher, interviews, and guest speakers may be scheduled periodically throughout the semester. This course is perfect for any student wishing to build their leadership skills and prepare for a career that involves leading others. 

Web Design - (#182)

Prerequisite: Computer Essentials 1 (or teacher approval) 

Course Objective:  This course is designed to teach students how to design, develop, publish and maintain a mobile responsive website.  This course will allow students to apply their creativity to a variety of design principles and learn the basics of HTML, the coding language of the web to meet consumer demand through a design thinking process.  Students will use technology tools in a hands-on lab setting and with community clientele to engage in high demand IT skills through the course design firm Oriole Web.Dev.Co.

CAPP Business Classes

The Cooperative Academic Partnership Program sponsored by the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh provides an opportunity for eligible sophomores, juniors and seniors to earn college credit in addition to the high school credit. Students must meet one of the following requirements: 

CAPP classes may have a cost associated with them ($105 per credit). If there is a cost the District will pay half the cost. The following is an approximate cost of what the student/parent may need to pay (cost may be reduced for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch).

INCubatorEdu - (#169)

The only class where you can run a business and make thousands of dollars! Throughout the INCubatorEdu@nfdl program, students ideate, develop, and iterate their own product or service startup in an attempt to gain investment funds in a final shark-tank style pitch event. Real entrepreneurs and business experts serve as volunteer coaches and mentors guiding student teams through the processes of developing hypotheses about a business concept, testing those hypotheses, adapting, and continually learning and improving. This cycle of experimentation is combined with foundational business content such as marketing and finance. The businesses students build are real – they are not business cases or simulated experiences – which means students experience mistakes, take risks, and learn to pivot based on market needs.

This course is designed for those students that have received approved funding after completing the INCubatorEdu course. The course fosters startup development to transition the business founded in INCubatorEdu into a sustainable, functioning business. Students will be challenged to think critically about the process of getting, growing and keeping customers, developing business processes, and continuing to build, test, and iterate the product or service. Emphasis will be placed on predicting, measuring, analyzing and concluding strategies developed and applied to promote the above mentioned process.
