Other Opportunities

Youth Tutoring Youth (YTY)

Grades 11 and 12
½ Credit per Semester
Prerequisites: An interest in helping others, the ability to get along with others, the willingness to be supervised by a corresponding teacher in another school and an excellent attendance record at school.

This class offering is intended for those interested in going into teaching or working with children in some capacity after high school. Those interested need to identify a teacher at the elementary or middle school level (who you would like to work with and who would be willing to invite you into their classroom) to assist in the classroom to gain experience working with students one-on-one with reading, spelling, math, re-teaching materials and offering other supports. Every YTY experience is unique and may have specific teacher expectations. Connect with your school counselor to determine the next steps needed to secure a YTY placement.

Early College Credit Program (UW Schools) Start College Now Program (Technical College)

This program allows all public high school juniors and seniors who meet certain requirements (completed the 10th grade, good academic standing, no record of disciplinary problems) to take post-secondary courses at a UW institution or Wisconsin technical college. Students earn dual credit (high school and college/university credit) for courses taken. Applications are due by February 1st for summer, March 1st for fall semester, and October 1st for spring semester.

Youth Apprenticeship Program

Wisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship is a workbased learning program designed for high school students. Youth Apprenticeships provide opportunities for high school students to experience, and gain skills in, a real work environment. This program is an excellent way for students to determine their interest or lack thereof in a certain industry.

In order to be eligible for a YA placement, an application needs to be completed and submitted to your school counselor. Placements are not guaranteed. If you land a placement then a course alike class will need to be scheduled as this is a requirement of the program.
