1st Graders have learned that birds use their beaks as tools. The shape and size of a bird's beak correspond to its purpose. Depending on the bird, the purpose of its beak may be to obtain food (seeds, vegetation, animals), hold food, tear food, sift out water, get at insects within wood, grasp an animal or a fish, carry and build things (twigs and mud to nests) and to protect itself.
This week we spent time exploring different ‘beaks’ in a series of ‘beak challenges.’ For each challenge, 1st graders used 3 different tools to mimic the function of similar bird beaks - pliers, tweezers, and pasta servers. 1st Graders got hands-on experiences to understand how different forms of a beak are specialized for different functions. These challenges also reinforced the work we have done with adjectives and verbs to describe birds and their actions.
