Math 9

I am excited to be able to teach math the grade 9 students this year. With it being everybody's favourite subject, how could it not be exciting? This year students will be introduced to to many useful skills that will help prepare them for high school and beyond.

I look forward to this being an amazing year.

April

After finishing up our skills with solving various sorts of linear equations, we move into a quick unit on solving linear inequalities. Students will quickly revisit how to use everyone's favourite symbols, the alligators < and >, but now they will be used to solve for a whole system of solutions

March

We are midway through our solving linear equations and starting to focus on solving with the distributive property and solving when the variable appears on both sides of the equation. Before we reach the end of the month, we will be moving into how we can apply these ideas to solve linear inequalities.

February

We are hitting the coldest months of winter, so luckily things are really heating up in math. We are completing a unit on multiplying polynomials by monomials, which introduces some new skills to us but also forces us to remember some of our old skills like our exponent laws. Midway through the month we will be switching focus onto solving various forms of linear equations.

January

We are excited to be back!!! Or so I have been told. We will be heading into our unit on multiplying and dividing polynomials by monomials. This is a skill that requires practice but is one that will be built upon in our math careers. From here, we will be moving into linear relations which is a slippery "slope" into graphing.

December

We will be completing a unit of geometric similarity and scaling unit and will then be moving into the wonderful world of polynomials. With the right amount of practice and care, students will be adding and subtracting polynomials with ease and will not have to rely on holiday miracles to solve problems.

November

We will be quickly completing our powers and exponents unit before taking a well earned fall break. Upon our return we will enlarging our math knowledge by diving  into the world of scale factors and similarity.  In this we will learn the principles of creating blue prints and construction drawing (to a small degree) to see how these skills are applied in the real world.

October

The spooky season is now on us and to celebrate in math we are learning the difference between rational and irrational numbers. OooOooH! We will be working on using all our operations on both fractions and decimals to solve word problems before moving into the scary subject of exponents and powers.

September

The year starts off with a bang as we dive into symmetry and surface area. Students will be learning about both linear and rotational symmetry and the organization and processes required to determine the surface area of 3D objects.   Finally, will continue our fun as we will be ending the month with a look into rational numbers (sorry pi but you don't belong here).
