February:

We have been discussing international relations, misinformation, and fake news! Students looked at the history of Disney Propaganda and the effects that Fake News can have on creating social media powerhouses. We have been working on creating Fake News PSA's and will soon discuss Black History Month.

January:

This month we continue the discussion of Environmentalism, looking at different policies that exist worldwide to help curb the rise of global warming and carbon emissions.

December:

We have continued the discussion on Power and Prejudice. Specifically, we have spent time discussing Prison Systems across the world. Students just completed a film study on Just Mercy, and we discussed the emotional injustices of life on death row.

November:

Students have been exploring power and prejudice in the novel Dear Martin by Angie Thomas. As students begin to discuss the many challenges that the protagonist takes in a world that he feels is against him, they also explore the dynamics of history and how our past events impact our prejudices today.

September:

We kick off with the exploration of social issues in society, and begin to implement our understanding of concepts such as power, bias, and society.   Importantly, we look at the importance of understanding stories, and how we must understand peoples place in life and how that impacts the way they see the world. We are also going to look at how we discuss and debate topics that are important to us in a respectful manner, and begin to have a conversation about what social issues exist in contemporary Canadian society. Excitedly, we take a look at Banksy and question how political power lives in Art- students take on this own challenge and create pieces of art that encourage political discussion.
