Scholar Involvement at New Heights


At New Heights, we offer a number of engagement opportunities for scholars to get involved in throughout the school year. We strive to provide meaningful programs that allow scholars the chance to become engaged, involved, or lead an activity they are passionate about.

After School: Play Study Win (PSW) 

PSW  offers free after-school programming which includes tournaments, sports festivals, trips, recreation leagues, camps, clinics, and events for sporting and recreational programs.

Broadway Junior

Broadway Junior was created to provide students with a  performing arts experience. It introduces young performers to musical theatre and to the joys of participating in live shows.

Community School Internships

The Community School Internship Program comprises of scholars who plan activities, support data analysis and promote upcoming events. Roles available: Community School Intern, Student Art Manager, and G.E.M Student Manager

G.E.M.

Girls Empowerment Movement (G.E.M.) is a school-based voluntary program in which self-identified girls can engage in weekly open discussions on various topics during their lunch period. G.E.M. sessions are currently separated by grade. While the separation of grade is due to lunch scheduling, all special events, trips, and fundraisers include all participants across all grades.

Boys to Men/My Brothers Keeper (MBK)

My Brothers Keeper (MBK) provides a safe environment where young men can bond, collaborate, learn life skills and ways to overcome adversity.

Medgar Evers STEP 

Medgar Evers Science Technology Entry Program (STEP) is a New Heights Collaboration with Medgar Evers College.  STEP provides academic enrichment in science and mathematics content areas to scholars.

Scholar Ambassadors

New Heights Ambassadors is an opportunity for New Heights Scholars to showcase their leadership skills and serve as representatives during special site visits, events, and activities within the community.

Peer Group Connection 

Peer Group Connection (PGC) is an evidence-based and school-based program that supports and eases students' successful transition to middle school.

Peer Mediation

Peer Mediation is a program where scholars are trained in conflict resolution strategies. They use these strategies to help their peers resolve conflicts that can impact learning and personal growth.

Publishing Club

Publishing Club is an after school program that offers scholars guidance with the writing, editing and formatting needed for various types of written publications including: magazine articles, novels, poetry and narratives.

Robotics

Robotics program is in partnership with Play Study Win and focuses on student learning about robots and other technical skills needed in the field of S.T.E.A.M.

Scholar Leadership Council

The Scholar Leadership Council is a group of elected students working together to increase student voice in school-based affairs and activities. Elections for positions are held every school year.

Scholar Council

Restorative Justice Equity Team (RJET)

The Scholar Equity Team (SET) was launched in Fall 2020 and has since transformed into the Restorative Justice Equity Team. This group operates as a scholar-centered group that will measure equity in school culture and will be promoting more culturally relevant practices in school operations.
