PHS is a one-to-one computing school. We started this program in the year 2016. Every student is issued a Chromebook when they begin at our school, which stays with them for their three years. Most of our teachers utilize some form of digital or blended learning in most lessons. As is always the case, there are a few teachers who lean more heavily into the digital domain, and a few who do so very seldom. We have found that the acute COVID crisis has forced many of our reluctant teachers to learn and use the digital resources available to them, proving the old adage true that "need is the mother of invention." And to be honest, we view it as a good thing that there is a variety within how heavily teachers engage with digital content, because different students respond differently. Thus, the variety helps to target different kinds of learners.
The school district strongly believes in using the power of technology to support good pedagogy in the classroom. The artifact attached here is a hyperlink to the various district resources provided to PHS to support our use of educational technology.
Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) used by the district and PHS for online learning. The Canvas software is integrated with our SIS (Infinite Campus) to enable students to send and receive assignments directly to and from their teachers. Teachers are being trained to have robust Canvas assignments that make use of sound, media, and a variety of digital resources. Students can collaborate with each other and teachers over Canvas, which has been especially useful during the pandemic. Teachers have really thrown themselves into the task of learning how to use Canvas.
When asked how often they structure their lessons, tasks, and activities in a way that requires students' use of digital tools for learning, 94% of teachers responded with "almost always" or "often." This is one of our areas of strength at PHS.
