Lesson 14: Basketball-O

LESSON 14

BASKETBALL-O

Description:

Students use a map of the lines on a basketball course to locate checkpoints and complete a series of courses.

Learning Objectives for Lesson:

Materials:

Intro:

For this lesson, students will have to think about the best way to get from one checkpoint to the next. They must move only along the lines of a basketball court, and they must visit checkpoints in the order they are marked. In order to do this, students should consider multiple ways of getting from one checkpoint to the next so that they may determine if one might be a little faster or better than another.

Warm-Up:

Line Tag: Students play a variation of tag with the added constraint that everyone can only move along the lines of a basketball court. They are not allowed to step off the lines, or jump from one line to another.

Main Activity:

Basketball-O: Students will use maps displaying the lines on a basketball court to find a series of checkpoints. They must move only along the lines as they do this, and must think ahead about the best path to follow in order to reach each checkpoint.

Reflection:

Extra Activity:

Obstacle Course: Students run, jump, and crawl their way through a series of obstacles as quickly as they can.

Notes:

The largest concern in this class generally revolves around safety, but there are some fun ways the activity can be altered in order to prevent students from bumping heads or pushing one another. The easiest method is to say that if a student encounters another student moving along the same line, they must both turn around and move in the opposite direction.
