What global citizenship means to me is treating the digital world with the same respect you have for your society, community, and family. It means being thoughtful and cautious about what you say, post, comment on, and access. The online community is a valuable resource that can significantly benefit everyone if used correctly. Thus, it should be treated with care and consideration. Modeling digital citizenship is accomplished by being an example for students through your own online and digital use. Showing how to be a proper digital citizen by avoiding questionable interactions, responding angrily to comments or posts, and always being respectful or choosing to disengage. Providing a decision map for students so they will have options when they find themselves in uncomfortable situations online is a resource I intend to provide for my students. I will also use instructional plans, such as the Global Digital Citizenship Unit I created for this class, to provide an interactive and substantial learning experience.
