Physical Education courses are provided by the Department of Physical Education (DPE). Teaching takes place primarily at the Charles University Sports Centre (Bruslařská 10, Prague 10 – Hostivař) and at the Faculty of Science Boathouse in Podolí. Some sports require the use of external facilities, including ice hockey, sport climbing, beach volleyball, gymnastics, and others. Information on how to reach individual sports facilities can be found on the Department’s website.
For students enrolled in most bachelor's degree programmes, Physical Education (PE) is a compulsory subject in the first year of study. During the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of most physical activities offered by the Department, including swimming. In the second year, PE remains compulsory, but students may choose from a wide range of sports offered in a given semester. In addition, students may enrol in various sports courses as elective subjects. For master's and doctoral students in all study programmes, PE courses are entirely optional.
As part of their studies, students in most bachelor's degree programmes are required to complete three compulsory sports courses organized by the Department of Physical Education:
Summer Training Course I (general sports course at Albeř) – 2nd semester
Winter Training Course – 3rd semester
Summer Training Course II – 4th semester
In addition to the compulsory courses, the Department offers a variety of optional courses both in the Czech Republic and abroad. These courses are popular not only for their sporting activities but also for their social aspect, as they bring together students from different fields of study.
Students enrolled in programmes with a modular curriculum (e.g. BBI, MOBIBO, EKOEVOBI) may take semester-long Physical Education courses and sports courses as elective subjects; Physical Education is not a compulsory component of their study plans.
Students who have registered for Physical Education courses (including sports courses) in SIS are required to complete an initial swimming assessment before the start of instruction. This requirement also applies to students enrolled in modular programmes. Based on the results of the assessment, students may be assigned to introductory swimming classes. The assessment is mandatory even for students who choose non-swimming Physical Education courses. For example, a student enrolled in climbing must complete the swimming assessment just like a student enrolled in swimming.
Students with health-related limitations may attend adapted Physical Education classes and complete the required courses in an alternative form. In cases of serious health conditions, students may apply for exemption from Physical Education requirements on medical or other serious grounds. Exemptions may also be granted to elite athletes. Students who are exempt from Physical Education do not receive credits for these courses.
Students who achieve outstanding results in academic, national, or international sporting competitions may apply in January for the Dean’s Extraordinary Sports Scholarship of the Faculty of Science, Charles University. Applications are submitted for achievements attained during the previous calendar year and must be accompanied by confirmation from the relevant sports federation or other documentation verifying the results. The contact person is Mgr. Iva Veberová (iva.veberova@natur.cuni.cz).
Throughout the academic year, the Department of Physical Education organizes a variety of sporting events, including the Faculty Volleyball League, orienteering competitions, and canoeing courses. Several sports teams are also active at the Faculty, including the Faculty of Science ice hockey team. Students may become members of the University Sports Club (VSK) Natural Sciences, which organizes events during the semester as well as throughout the summer holidays, or they may participate in activities organized under the auspices of the Czech University Sports Association (ČAUS).
Information about all events and activities is regularly published on the Department of Physical Education website and its Facebook page. For a better overview of the Department’s activities, visit the Department of Physical Education website.
