Recapping The Met Gala: A Garden of Suits

Hannah Mevorach, Business Manager

On May 6, 2024, stars graced the Metropolitan Museum with their presence as they attended one of the fashion world’s most prestigious events: the Met Gala. This year’s theme was “Garden of Time,” a theme which I expected would mean a plethora of flowers on the red carpet (this year’s carpet was actually off white and green, reflecting the garden theme). As always, there were hits, misses, and a disappointingly high number of black suits. I’ve compiled looks from ten different celebrities, and scored them out of ten based on their creativity, attention to the theme, and how much I personally liked them.

Chris Hemsworth, Met Gala Co-Chair and Actor

Creativity: 1/10

Theme: 0/10

How Much I Liked It: 1/10

Overall: 1/10

See, for a normal red carpet, I actually like this outfit. But for the Met Gala—especially a Met Gala that Chris Hemsworth was chairing—I expected more. It lacks the creativity I would expect from a Met Gala Co-Chair, although I gave it one point for being a tan suit instead of the basic black one half of male Met Gala attendees wear.

Kim Kardashian, Reality Star

Creativity: 1/10

Theme: 2/10

How Much I Liked It: 0/10

Overall: 1/10

While this dress might seem unique and creative, it also looks like pretty much all of the dresses Kim wears to events. It’s not particularly original for her, and in videos from the Met Gala, she looks like she’s struggling to breathe due to the tightness of the top. The skirt is made from a bunch of silver leaves, which is on theme, but I deducted points from all categories because I don’t think fashion should inhibit basic bodily functions such as breathing.

Mike Faist, Actor

Creativity: 2/10

Theme: 3/10

How Much I Liked It: 4/10

Overall: 3/10

Mike Faist decided to be bold and spice up the basic black suit with tan pants and a radish pin. However, this is my favorite basic suit of the night. While nothing about the clothes themselves stand out, I love the radish pin. I want to know whose idea it was to add it. Actually, maybe it's a good thing the rest of the outfit is so basic; it lets the radish pin shine.

Anna Wintour, Met Gala Chairperson and Editor in Chief of Vogue

Creativity: 4/10

Theme: 8/10

How Much I Liked It: 5/10

Overall: 6/10

I actually like the jacket, and the flower pattern is really pretty. It’s not super eye-catching, and I would’ve expected Anna Wintour to go more all out, but it also looks like it’s not super uncomfortable and like she could probably sit in it, something which cannot be said for many of the other outfits on this list.

Jennifer Lopez, Met Gala Co-Chair, Actress, and Singer

Creativity: 6/10

Theme: 5/10

How Much I Liked It: 7/10

Overall: 6/10

This dress looks really cool. The translucent silver is beautiful, and even though it isn’t very gardeny, it still feels like it could fit in a “garden of time.” However, it is very similar to what Jennifer Lopez wears on every red carpet, and as a Co-Chair of the Met Gala, she should have switched it up at least a little bit.

Bad Bunny, Met Gala Co-Chair and Musical Artist

Creativity: 8/10

Theme: 6/10

How Much I Liked It: 7/10

Overall: 7/10

See, being a man doesn’t mean you have to wear a boring suit. It's got flowers, a cool hat, and looks like it just walked out of a Shakesperian play. Like, I would do a duel in that outfit.

Baz Luhrmann, Director

Unbounded Imagination: 7/10

Empathy (For the Theme): 9/10

How Much I Liked It: 10/10

Overall: 9/10

The director of Elvis, Romeo + Juliet, and The Great Gatsby did not disappoint at the Met Gala, channeling his inner green light. Luhrmann stunned in a green, floral suit. I love the patterns and it’s very “garden of time.” I also really like that he and his wife are matching.

Dove Cameron, Actress and Singer

Creativity: 9/10

Theme: 10/10

How Much I Liked It: 9/10

Overall: 10/10

The flowers are so garden of time, and I love the sleeves, it’s a nice twist on the usual long skirt. This is one of my personal favorite looks.

Alia Bhatt, Actress

Creativity: 9/10

Theme: 10/10

How Much I Liked It: 10/10

Overall: 10/10

It isn’t visible in this picture, but this dress actually had a long train with flower designs on it. This is one of my favorite looks. It’s so pretty and it fits the theme so well.

Zendaya, Met Gala Co-Chair, Actress, and Singer

Creativity: 100/10

Theme: 100/10

How Much I Liked It: 100/10

Overall: 100/10

Easily the best dressed of the night. Zendaya walked the red carpet in two different dresses, both of which were incredibly on theme, creative, and just overall incredible. To get one dress this impressive is a rare feat, but two? If the Met Gala had a winner, it would be Zendaya (and of course her stylist, Law Roach).
