My Top 5 Emily Blunt Movies

Hannah Mevorach, Business Manager

As a disclaimer, I have only seen seven Emily Blunt movies, a statistic that is incredibly disappointing. However, a month ago, it was five, so overall seven is a dramatic improvement (140%). Some of the films I have not seen include both Quiet Place movies, Mary Poppins, and Jungle Cruise. Nonetheless, since Emily Blunt is, like, my favorite actress ever (Oppenheimer would have been better if she’d had twice the screentime), I decided to rank my top five anyway. And, yes, I have seen Devil Wears Prada.

5. Sherlock Gnomes (2018)

The sequel (and superior) to the critically acclaimed Gnomeo and Juliet (look it up, more than half of viewers enjoyed it). Gnomeo and Juliet, for reference, is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet where all of the characters are garden gnomes living on enemy lawns. Emily Blunt voices Juliet (who survives this version of the story). I saw Sherlock Gnomes before Gnomeo and Juliet, so being thrown into a story about gnome versions of Romeo and Juliet working with a gnome version of Sherlock Holmes to uncover the evil criminal who had been smashing garden gnomes was quite confusing at first. But really, the originality of this movie has to be admired. Where else do Romeo and Juliet not only live, but become sidekicks of the Great Sherlock Gnomes? This grand literary crossover simply has it all.

4. The Muppets (2011)

A classic, and my second favorite muppets movie. In this movie, Walter the Muppet and his human brother, Gary, must bring the Muppets back together and save the Muppets’ theater from being destroyed so that the area can be used for oil drilling. While this movie is incredibly enjoyable, as an Emily Blunt film, it is less than ideal. Emily Blunt is in the movie for a grand total of 30 seconds (an estimate). In fact, I didn’t realize she was even in the movie until I looked up “Emily Blunt movies” on google to find movies I’d seen to make this list. However, because this film is just so good, it gets to go slightly higher on the list than its Emily Blunt screentime warrants.

3. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

A Tom Cruise action movie, where he repeats the same day over and over again in order to save the world from an alien invasion. Emily Blunt plays his mentor and love interest. It’s a really fun movie with a ton going on. Emily Blunt has plenty of screentime, and her face is actually seen, something which can’t be said for the previous two movies on this list. I actually watched this movie while sick, so I don’t know how reliable my memory of it actually is, but from what I can recall, it was really good. The only thing I would’ve changed is giving Emily Blunt more screentime, but any movie could use that.

2. Oppenheimer (2023)

How could I forget the movie that earned Emily Blunt her first Oscar nomination? In Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt plays the titular Oppenheimer’s alcoholic wife. It’s quite the movie, and the only one on this list that I saw in theaters. The movie is spectacular, with stunning visuals and strong performances all around. Blunt certainly earned her Oscar nomination with her impressive performance.

1. Into the Woods (2014)

My personal favorite Emily Blunt movie. The movie version of the musical Into the Woods, which covers several fairytales (including Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood) as they converge in the woods. Emily Blunt plays the Baker’s Wife, who spends the first half of the movie collecting magical items to have a child, and the second half ditching said child to have (brief) affairs with Prince Charming (Chris Pine) and fall off cliffs. I personally love movie musicals, so it’s not surprising that Into the Woods tops my list. I do, however, have issues with James Corden, who plays the Baker, and whom I feel should stay away from musical movies (and movies in general), but the rest of the movie (Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, and Anna Kendrick) makes up for that.
