Another factor for the reason why many passengers were lost is because of the amount of lifeboats. There were not enough lifeboats for the amount of passengers. Not only that, but two of the lifeboats sailed away without it being fully filled with people, but only half, or less than half. That is also partly the passengers fault for not getting as many people onto the boat as possible.
“Some sources claimed they were afraid of the lifeboat buckling under the weight, others suggested it was because the crew were following strict maritime tradition to evacuate women and children first. Few men were allowed into the lifeboats on the port side, while the starboard side only allowed many men into boats after women and children boarded.”
“As the half-filled boats rowed away from the ship, they were too far for other passengers to reach, and most lifeboats did not return to the wreck, due to protests from passengers or crewmen to prevent being swamped by drowning victims. Only two lifeboats returned to retrieve survivors from the water, some of whom later died.”

Sheridan, Michael. “Human Error Sank Titanic, Not Iceberg, Survivor's Granddaughter Claims.”NY Daily News, 22 Sept. 2010,
The granddaughter of the ocean liner’s second officer, Charles Lightoller, claims that human error is the real cause of the titanic sinking. She stated that they could’ve easily missed the iceberg, and that the reason why they hit the iceberg was because the captain turned the ship the wrong way. Also, she said that if the ship had stayed still and wouldn’t have kept moving, then there would be better chance of more passengers living.
"The real reason why Titanic hit the iceberg, which has never come to light before, is because he turned the wheel the wrong way," Patten said Once the mistake had been made, she added, "they only had four minutes to change course and by the time [first officer William] Murdoch spotted [Robert] Hitchins' mistake and then tried to rectify it, it was too late."
After the Titanic struck the iceberg, she said, her grandfather believed the mighty vessel sank faster than it should have because J. Bruce Ismay, chairman of White Star Line, pressured the ship's captain to keep sailing."If Titanic had stood still, she would have survived at least until the rescue ship came and no one need have died," Patten said.

Only 32% of the Titanic’s, roughly, 2,200 people survived, when the total space the lifeboats provided could have supported 53.4%. The passengers and crew underestimated the amount of lifeboat space, and most of the lifeboats weren’t used to their maximum capacity. 20% more of the people on the Titanic could have been saved if they weren’t as careless. About 800 of the 1,500 people who perished on the Titanic were passengers. Though others believe in the possibility that it was the ship designer’s fault for not adding enough lifeboats, they still could have saved many more lives with the space provided.
"1,517 - the number of people killed in the sinking of the Titanic. 68% - the percentage of people (passengers and crew) lost in the disaster. 53.4% - the total percentage who could have survived, given the number of lifeboat spaces available."
"832 - the number of passengers who perished."
"63% - the percentage of passengers who perished."
