Placements are your opportunity to make sense of the theory and skills that you have been learning at University and put them into practice. As an apprentice this is an opportunity to apply your learning in a range of different areas. Which is a requirement the professional bodies stipulate.
All of your placements are assessed against knowledge, skills and behaviours that build towards you being able to complete the End Point Assessment. After this you will be able to apply to the HCPC for entry onto the Occupational Therapy Register.
You have to cover the first three bolded areas over the apprennticeship. We have added in an extended scope area where you will work with people who don't traditionally see an occupational therapist - here you will use your knowledge of the benefits of occupation to improve a persons's quality of life. You will have a range of support structures and your educator will support you as long arm ( not working with you but with whom you will meet and share evidence regularly)
There are some key things that you can do to make the process of going out on placement easier.
Complete a placement profile - this document is central when we allocate your placements. It lets us know where you are living, any circumstances which affect your ability to do certain placements and your preferences and interests. We will ask you to update this every year but if your circumstances changes during the year, it is really important that you tell us about this. We will be going through this as part of your induction.
Apply for your DBS - You cannot go out on your placement without a DBS certificate. Please make sure you register with the update service. You will get the only copy of the certificate. Please do not lose.
Get occupational health clearance - Complete your occupational health form and ensure that you get all the immunisations or proof of immunisations required of you. You will need to get immunisations and proof of immunity via your employer!
