CRUSADER CONNECTION

A MESSAGE FROM MWHS PRINCIPAL ELISA SOTO

Hello Crusader Family,

Hope you had a wonderful winter break and are ready for 2024🎉! Time for our first newsletter of the year, packed with academic greatness. We also want to say a great big THANK YOU for approving the Capital Project!!

Dear Students:

Hey Rockstars, we know goal-setting might sound like a snooze-fest, but hear us out. This year, let's aim for epic achievements. You got this!💪

Parents and Guardians: Surviving High School 101:

Parents, if your New Year's resolution includes decoding your teenager's cryptic text messages and figuring out what on earth "lit" really means, you're not alone. We are in this together -Thank you for your support!

Faculty and Staff: The Real Heroes Behind the Scenes

To the unsung heroes of M-W, our amazing faculty and staff. From perfecting the art of sneaking veggies into cafeteria meals to mastering the mysterious ways of the copy machine. Extra points if you can keep a straight face during a student's excuse for why their homework was eaten by a rogue llama (they get creative).

Great Tip to celebrate this year's motto: "Connection/Collaboration/ Community"

Stay tuned for upcoming events, where we'll attempt to break the school record for best attendance.

Here's to a January filled with laughter and success.

Happy New Year!

teacher Spotlight

We extend our deepest gratitude to our extraordinary music teacher, whose unwavering dedication and exceptional guidance have propelled our students to new heights. Under his tutelage, our budding musicians have not only honed their skills but have also embraced the transformative power of music. The pinnacle of this journey was reached as our students took the stage at the prestigious Radio City Music Hall, a testament to the teacher's tireless efforts and passion for nurturing musical talent.

Reading buddies

It is heartwarming to witness the positive impact that high school students can have on the learning journey of younger minds. Recently, a delightful initiative took place as high school students visited local elementary schools to read to kindergarten students.

"An Artist's Response to Human Rights"

Congratulations to our 35 MWHS Senior Art Majors who are showing work in the "An Artist's Response to Human Rights" exhibit!

This exhibit is sponsored annually by the Orange County Human Rights Commission. For more than a decade, our students have participated in this annual exhibition. After a three year hiatus, the exhibition opportunity has been reinstated.

The MWHS student artists reviewed and researched the 30 articles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They each chose one and created visual interpretations in a variety of media. The artwork will be on on display at the Orange Hall Gallery, SUNY Orange, Middletown Campus until January 5, 2024.

Student's from Mr. Vero's College CPR / 1st Aid class took a field trip to The Orange County Emergency 911 center and Touro Medical College.

At the Orange County Emergency 911 center students were taken on a guided tour where they learned about the different divisions that make up emergency management at the county level and the importance of being prepared for an emergency.

At Touro Medical College students learned about the many different career paths in medicine and had the amazing opportunity of receiving a hands-on tour of several of the college's laboratories; including the Simulation lab and the Anatomy and Physiology lab.

On Friday December 15, the Kids Changing the World Club delivered hats that they collected to Garnet Health Medical Center's Cancer Center.

These hats were collected during the club's annual Hats for Hope Drive to benefit cancer patients at the hospital. For the first time, the Crochet for a Cause Club at the high school also took part in this drive by donating a bag full of hats that they created during club meetings this fall. It was a perfect partnership of two clubs coming together for a worthy cause.

Shown are members of the Kids Changing the World Club posing at the Cancer Center.

The Kids Changing the World Club held its first Toy Drive to benefit kids in the MW community along with the Monroe Police Department.

During the last week before winter break, members of the Kids Changing the World club gathered at the Monroe Police Station where they delivered and distributed toys they helped to collect to district children.

A perfect way to give back to the community and kickstart the holiday season!

Information Corner

Our Mid-Year Examinations and the NYS Regents Examinations, are scheduled for Tuesday, January 23 - Friday, January 26, 2024. Students will only come to the high school when they are scheduled for exams on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.  Friday, January 26 will be a regular day of school for all students (the small number of students scheduled to take a Regents Exam on Friday will take them during the school day and will be excused from classes).

Some in-class exams will be given the week before.  Please review the examination and transportation schedule information.  Please pay careful attention to examination times, transportation information, and cancellations due to inclement weather.  Subject area teachers will inform students of specific room assignments.

Capital project passes; Thank you, M-W voters!

On Tuesday, December 5, district residents approved a $98 million capital improvement project by a vote of 878 yes votes to 290 no votes. The project will address long overdue major system improvements and upgrades districtwide. Learn more at https://www.mw.k12.ny.us/page/capital-improvement-program-december-2023. Thank you, M-W voters!

Reminder: Inclement Weather/Emergency Reminder

The school district has built six days into the academic school year calendar in case of inclement weather or other emergencies that would cause schools to close. In the event that we exhaust these allotted “snow” days, the district is prepared to pivot to remote instruction.

Please have arrangements in place in the event of an early dismissal and make sure that your child is aware of these alternative plans. If schools are closed, please note that Club Kid is also closed and out-of-district students are not transported.

Families will be notified of any changes to the district’s regular schedule via email, text and/or phone call, based on preferences selected on the Parent/Student Portal. Please double check to ensure your contact information is updated. If you have questions, please email mcc@mw.k12.ny.us.

Notifications will also be posted on the district’s website, as well as on Facebook and Instagram. You may also receive a notification directly from the district’s app, which can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play.

BRING LUNCH FROM HOME?
free sides available

For those M-W students who prefer to bring their lunches from home, the district is excited to offer FREE sides to accompany their homemade meals. Items such as milk, fruit, vegetables and more are available. Students must choose three or more of the offered items to receive them at no cost.

This offering is made possible by the designation granted to the District by the New York State Education Department’s Child Nutrition Program (CEP). The CEP is a funding option under the National School Lunch Act that allows eligible schools to provide free meals to all students.

With the Community Eligibility Provision designation, all children in Monroe-Woodbury Central School District schools attending in person can receive one breakfast and one lunch per school day at no cost, eliminating out-of-pocket expenses for families and ensuring that all students receive two nutritious meals per day.
