Jazz Band

What Is Jazz Band?

Overview

Jazz Band is a voluntary group that meets before school to learn introductory jazz repertoire and improvisation. It is open to any 7th or 8th grade band member (and specific 6th graders with Mrs. Kamp’s permission) with an interest in broadening their musical experience. The music is fun, challenging and rewarding, and all students will benefit from practicing their parts at home. Students who join Jazz Band should commit for the remainder of the year.

Rhythm Section

Students interested in playing drum set, piano, electric bass or guitar should speak to Mrs. Kamp. We have 2 openings for each of these instruments. Students taking private lessons outside of school will be given precedence. Percussionists who do not play drum set will be able to play bells or other auxiliary percussion parts depending on piece needs.

Rehearsals- when?

Students must commit to attending rehearsal on Wednesdays before school from 7:20-7:50am. See schedule below (dates subject to change-Mrs. Kamp will email and post on Google Classroom if Jazz gets canceled). If you are at school that day, you are expected to come to jazz rehearsals. Absences should be communicated with Mrs. Kamp via email prior to 7:15am. Repeated absences affect the entire group and may lead to being removed from Jazz Band. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Kamp.

Additional Materials Needed

Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble - Book (red cover)

The Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble book (red) is required for participation. This is similar in cost and size to one of the books used in concert band. Likewise, they are available online and at local music stores - make sure to purchase the book for YOUR instrument prior to our first rehearsal! (percussionists should obtain the C TREBLE/VIBES book unless they have spoken to Mrs. Kamp about drumset).
