Introduction to Internship

Grade Level Placement: 9, 10, 11

1/2 Unit/S     Prerequisite: None- Completion of Applied Cornerstones Recommended   Credit Type: Practical Arts (PA)

The course is designed to help students develop a professional identity online and in the workplace in preparation for internship placement. The curriculum will include activities, surveys, assignments, and research related to future career placements. Students will write resumes, practice interviewing skills, develop a concept of work ethic and work narrative, and study workplace behavior expectations. The course will include an analysis of profit vs. non-profit business models. Students will learn to develop professional communications—phone, email protocol, business letters, LinkedIn profiles and other social media tools. Students will interview selected professionals in their field of interest, perform job shadowing, build a LinkedIn network, and do survey work for a potential internship placement.

Internship On Campus

Grade Level Placement:  10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/S or 1 Unit/Y    Prerequisite:  Introduction to Internship.       Credit Type: Practical Arts (PA)

Students will complete an internship placement on campus. The course will focus on an individualized workplace learning plan developed with a mentor, course teacher, and the student. Interns will give a presentation of their learning at each marking period, track successive approximations of career duties for their position, and self-reflect throughout the experience in routine writing. 

Internship Off Campus

Grade Level Placement:  11, 12

1/2 Unit/S or 1 Unit/Y   Prerequisite:   Introduction to Internship         Credit Type: Practical Arts (PA)

Students will complete an internship placement with a community partner off campus. The course will focus on an individualized workplace learning plan developed with a mentor, course teacher, and the student. Interns will give a presentation of their learning at each marking period, track successive approximations of career duties for their position, and self-reflect throughout the experience in routine writing. This course will meet both on campus and at the individual’s worksite.


11th-12th Grade Interns who are interested in off campus internships must:

Be enrolled in at least three other courses that meet on campus, pursue timely graduation, have a Personal Plan of Study, pursue regular requirements for a high school diploma, maintain 95 percent attendance rate, and demonstrate quality citizenship skills
