Course Description

Fitness for Life (Required)

Grade Level Placement: 09

1 Unit/Y    Prerequisite: None     Credit Type: PE/Health

This required course integrates topics of health and physical education as it introduces students to a wide variety of sports and recreational physical activities.  Students experience a sampling of activities to examine their interests while maintaining a healthy fitness level and studying the basic concepts necessary for healthy living.  It addresses significant problems of personal, social, emotional, mental, and physical growth.  This class includes contemporary topics and discussion of drug abuse, human development, sexually transmitted infections, ecological problems, and community and family relations.

Health (Required for students who have not had a full year of Fitness for Life)

Grade Level Placement:  10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/S     Prerequisite: None    Credit Type: Health

This is a required course if health requirements aren’t completed in a full-year, integrated physical education/health class.   This class studies significant problems of personal, social, emotional, mental, and physical growth.  It includes contemporary topics and discussion of drug abuse, human development, sexually transmitted infections, ecological problems, and community and family relations.

Focus on Fitness I  

Grade Level Placement: 10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/ Fall     Prerequisite: None     Credit Type: PE

This course is taught during 1st semester and introduces concepts to students. All units will focus on cardiovascular activity and flexibility, strength and endurance, and body composition.

Focus on Fitness II 

Grade Level Placement: 10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/ Spring   Prerequisite: None     Credit Type: PE

This course is taught during 2nd semester taking students to an advanced level of cardiovascular activity, flexibility, strength, and endurance, and body composition. 

Tactical Activities I & II

Grade Level Placement: 10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/S or 1 Unit/Y    Prerequisite: None     Credit Type: PE

This course develops students’ game sense and provides practice playing concept-based games. All units focus on flexibility, cardiovascular, strength, endurance, and body composition.


During the school year four different units (due to facility usage and weather) are explored.  Although this is a semester long class, students may sign up for both semester as different units are being taught.  (Tactical Activities I is offered in the Fall and Tactical Activities II is offered in the Spring Semester)

Outdoor Adventure

Grade Level Placement: 10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/S     Prerequisite: None      Credit Type: PE

This is a semester co-ed course which focuses on providing additional experiences with team-building, environmental science, and orienteering.  Students participate in a variety of outdoor activities.  Field experiences are scheduled to support student learning.  

Strength Training

Grade Level Placement: 10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/S  Prerequisite: Fitness for Life     Credit Type: PE

MRH Weight Training course is a class designed to improve and create opportunities to increase performance skills through cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.  Training principles and nutrition will be emphasized in this course. Building off previous knowledge taught in the 9th grade Fitness for life course, lessons will be focused on application of training principles, Olympic lifts,  agility training,  core conditioning, and speed enhancement.  Students will analyze their current fitness levels and set goals that are designed to increase their performance.
