Computer Applications 

Business Information Technology Pathway

Offered: Fall Semester Only

This semester long course is designed to teach general computer operations and applications. Topics studied during Quarter 1 include GSuite systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing for a business setting. Focus also includes the development of workplace readiness skills. Quarter 2 focuses on HTML and CSS web design. Students can use the skills and concepts from this course for personal development of online and computer skills whether in the classroom or in a business.

Computer Art Studio (CAS)

Business Information Technology Pathway

Offered: Spring Semester Only

This semester long course introduces students to the field of graphic design and provides students opportunities to explore visual communication techniques using the same tools professional graphic designers use, with a focus on Adobe Illustrator. Students learn the basics of manipulating graphics on the computer; the use of type, color, and space to create appealing and informative compositions; and how to meet the expectations of clients who seek their services. This course also designs various projects as needed for the MRH District allowing students to begin to develop a portfolio of work.


Students should purchase a USB flash drive for use in this course.

Graphic / Photo Publications

Business Information Technology Pathway

1/2 Unit/S     Prerequisite: CAS (Computer Art Studio)     Credit Type: Practical Arts (PA)

This semester long course is designed for students who have a basic grasp of computer application technology and graphic manipulation.  The course will use various graphic editors with an emphasis on Photoshop.  Photography is an indispensable tool for photographers, designers, and all other creative professionals, as well as students.  Photography skills are developed in addition to ways to Photoshop the work.  Core skills covered include working with layers and selections, adjusting, manipulating and retouching photos, painting, adding text and more. The students are expected to design, create and complete an Independent Study Project by the end of the semester expanding on their portfolio of work.  

MRH Print Shop

Business Information Technology Pathway

Grade Level Placement: 11, 12

½ Unit/S    1 Unit/Y      Prerequisite: CAS and Graphic/Photo Publications with a “C” or better    

Credit Type: Practical Arts (PA)

This course is designed for students who are experienced in graphic desktop publishing. It applies the skills from Computer Applications, Computer Art Studio, and Graphic/Photo Publications by having students serve the district with various printing jobs while learning advanced techniques and tools. Students solve design problems from the perspective of a graphic designer working with a team of skilled professionals through a number of projects. Students are expected to design, create and complete several projects that meet the parameters of the customer. Students will continue to develop their portfolio.

MRH Publications

Business Information Technology Pathway

Offered: Fall Semester and Spring Semester Full Year Requirement 

This course gives students an opportunity to learn about publication by participating in all facets of MRH publication needs. Students are exposed to theme development; photography; advertising; merchandising; layout and design; copy, caption and headline writing; interviewing; surveying; proofreading; using computers and other concrete skills involved in creating a publication. In addition, students learn to accept responsibility for publishing, including developing budgets, timetables and scheduling for production. By working with deadlines and cooperating in a group effort toward the completion of a common goal, this course requires responsibilities outside the classroom such as taking photographs, creating original MRH Publications, and creating projects like the MRH Yearbook, event tickets, programs, and the MRH Literary Magazine to meet demanding deadlines. Soliciting advertisements and yearbook sales are a component of this business class. Grade includes participation in class as well as ad/subscription sales. Students will continue to develop their portfolio. The position of editor is closed to anyone attending South County Tech.

Mobile Journalism 

Grade Level Placement:  09, 10, 11, 12

1/2 Unit/S or 1 Unit/Y Prerequisite: A teacher approval and interview required     Credit Type: Practical Arts (PA)

This semester course, (MOJO) introduces students to new trends in video productions and news reporting. Students learn how to create short video segments about current events happening at MRH using a combination of small HD cameras, microphones, and laptops.  These short videos will be for publication on the school YouTube channel as well as for the Yearbook augmented and virtual reality pages.  In addition to the technical skills involved, students collaborate and use journalism techniques that include storyboarding, script writing, and interviewing. This course demands creativity, reliability, and responsibility. Additionally, as part of the coursework, students are expected to cover events after school hours as assigned.
