Course Description

ESOL I

Grade Level Placement: 09

1 Unit/Y     Prerequisite: ACCESS entrance exam, limited spoken English and a prior school's transcript     

Credit Type: English (ENG)

This course provides English acquisition skills to newcomers to this county. Students with no prior English background will be taught English acquisition for listening, reading, writing and eventually speaking.

ESOL II

Grade Level Placement: 10

1 Unit/Y     Prerequisite: ACCESS level is high beginner to intermediate level, passed ESOL I   

Credit Type: English (ENG)

The course provides English acquisition skills to students scoring as beginners or intermediate levels, typically a student after one year in the program.

ESOL III

Grade Level Placement: 11

1 Unit/Y     Prerequisite: ACCESS level is high intermediate to advanced level, passed ESOL II, or based on school transcripts   

Credit Type: English (ENG)

This course provides English acquisition skills to students scoring as high intermediate to advance on the ACCESS assessment.  Typically, a student been in the program multiple years and/or has been tested with ACCESS.

ESOL III

Grade Level Placement: 12

1 Unit/Y     Prerequisite: ACCESS level is high advanced to proficient, passed ESOL III, or based on school transcripts   

Credit Type: English (ENG)

This course provides English acquisition skills to students scoring as high advanced to proficient on the ACCESS assessment. Typically, it is offered to the student in the program after three years who is preparing to transition from being an active ESOL student to a monitored ESOL student.

ESOL in the Content Area

Grade Level Placement: 09, 10, 11, 12

1 Unit/Y     Prerequisite: Has been tested with ACCESS and/or based on prior school’s transcripts and/or need for support in current content area classes  

Credit Type: Elective (ELEC)

This course provides English acquisition skills to students across all curricular areas. Students develop learning strategies and skills to be successful throughout their high school course work.
