Our 4th grade HAL students have been learning about the science and engineering behind building bridges in a unit presented by the Nebraska 4-H Extension Service. They have learned about different types of trusses that are often used in bridges and tried their hand at building bridges using K-Nex rods and connectors. They have been challenged with the task of building a bridge out of popscicle sticks and glue to see how much weight it can hold. They will also need to calculate "costs" using the amounts assigned to each popscicle stick. Bridges are due on February 19 and will be displayed in the cases in the front hallway.
Our 5th Grade HAL students learned about DNA in a program entitled "Crime Scene DNA" led by the Nebraska 4-H Extension Office. They were able to follow an experimental method step by step to extract DNA from a strawberry. They discovered that the strawberry's DNA is a whiteish slimy substance, which you can see in some of the pictures at the end of the straw.
Our 3rd Grade HAL students learned about Animals on the Move at MCC North Express with Science on a Sphere. They learned about different types of migration: annual, abrupt, and magnetic as well as how animals migrate in the air, water, and on ground. They examined some animals' migration patterns. Then, they experimented with magnetism to discover the extent of a magnetic force through various barriers.
Our 4th Grade HAL learned about and experimented with using microbits in a workshop put on by ESU #3. They also learned about the type of household items that use microbit technology.
