We’re diving into how AI can streamline special education documentation and professional learning. This video explores the power of Google Gemini AI and NotebookLM in supporting educators with IEPs, PLAAFP statements, and structured learning resources.
📽️ Check out this video where we cover:
✅ How Gemini AI can generate sample PLAAFP statements tailored to student needs
✅ Strategies for setting goals and objectives for students who use gestures, facial expressions, and vocalizations
✅ How NotebookLM can serve as a learning assistant—allowing you to upload procedural guides, ask questions, and receive targeted responses while it searches your materials
✅ Practical ways to use AI to support documentation, compliance, and instructional planning
While AI can enhance efficiency, your expertise remains essential in ensuring student-centered decision-making. This session highlights how AI can act as a support tool, making complex processes easier to navigate.
This article delves deeper into antecedent-based interventions, offering specific methods for implementing several of them.
Antecedent-based interventions (ABIs) are strategies used to modify the environment before a target behavior occurs, aiming to prevent undesirable behaviors and encourage desired ones. Research supports the effectiveness of ABIs in reducing challenging behaviors and increasing socially appropriate behaviors. By altering the environment or circumstances that precede a behavior, ABIs can significantly decrease the likelihood of undesirable behavior. They are considered evidence-based practices and have been effective across various age groups and settings.
Here are some common examples of ABIs:
Noncontingent Reinforcement (NCR): Providing access to a desired item or attention on a fixed schedule, regardless of behavior.
Environmental Enrichment: Adding stimulating activities or items to the environment to reduce boredom and prevent problem behaviors.
High-Probability Request Sequence: Presenting a series of easy tasks that the individual is likely to comply with before introducing a more challenging task.
Visual Aids: Using visual schedules, timers, or cue cards to communicate expectations and routines.
Providing Choices: Allowing the individual to choose between options to increase their sense of control and reduce resistance.
Don't know where to start? Use the student's Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). FBAs help identify the reasons behind challenging behaviors by analyzing when, where, and why they occur. This information can be used to design antecedent-based interventions (ABIs) that modify the environment to prevent these behaviors. By tailoring ABIs to the specific functions of behaviors identified through FBAs, staff can effectively promote positive behavior change.
