IXL.com

If you have internet access, IXL.com is a great way for students to practice all kinds of 5th grade skills. If they get a problem wrong, have them take the time to read what their error was and how to fix it. It's like having a teacher right there. In the weekly update I have listed 5th grade IXL skills students can practice that are directly related to the skill we are working on for that day.

In 5th Grade we work on many math concepts:

  • Division
  • Real world word problems
  • +/- fractions & decimals
  • Equivalent fractions & decimals
  • Mixed #'s, improper fractions, etc...
  • Recognizing patterns of change
  • Order of operations
  • True/False equations and inequalities
  • Solving algebraic equations
  • Describe & classify 3D figures and nets
  • Determine area, volume, and surface area
  • Use median, mode, range, mean/average to analyze data
  • Create and analyze double bar and line graphs

Expectations:

Each mathematician has many skills and ideas about math. In our class, we focus on HOW we solved problems (even answers that are incorrect). I encourage students to share their strategies and LISTEN to others' strategies to build a strong number sense. The more strategies they know, the better! We learn from our errors. We also focus on having a growth mindset and positive mental attitude when working on challenging problems.

Each student at VH is held to high standards. The graphic on the right are the 8 math practices. We set up lesson and opportunities for students to develop their mathematical mindset. Math is all around them. We are making problem solvers.

Number Talks are short discussions between teachers and students about how to solve mental math problems. The focus is on all the possible strategies they use to find their answers. Number talks foster number sense — the ability to work with numbers by breaking and decomposing them into parts.
