In 5th grade we choose to ability group our math classes to give equitable access to the learning. This year my class will be reviewing much of the 5th grade standards and then move forward into the 6th grade curriculum. I will be working with students who are projected to complete grade level standards with accuracy and confidence.
Students will be immersed in the Everyday Mathematics curriculum. The design of the program is to help more children learn more mathematics. The curriculum expects higher levels of accomplishment at every grade level while also incorporating features that help make math accessible to all students.
Supplemental materials will be used to reinforce and extend the learning. Computer based programs like IXL and Xtra Math will use technology to enhance targeted programming to hone math skills and create a fun alternative to traditional means of study. Links will be included at the bottom of this page. All sites will be accessible anywhere you can get internet access.
Students are expected to complete problem sets outside of the classroom multiple times throughout a given school week. These problems are designed to reinforce new learning, not to create busywork. Homework will never be new learning or exceed a time frame that is longer then 20 to 25 minutes.
Students may come home with completed or partially completed assignments. Often there will be time at the end of class to start the homework so students will have a positive comfort level when tackling the problem set. If you have further questions about this policy feel free to contact me directly.
