Students are expected to read at least 30 minutes per day outside of school. This is extremely important to their development. Students should read for enjoyment daily.
Each day we work on:
Current Read aloud: Front Desk by Kelly Yang
In the first unit of the year we are working on reading with writerly wide-awakeness and being able to write strong reader's responses about our books including specific text evidence and our own thoughts and analysis.
We are halfway through our first book club rotation!
Students are reading the same novel as other students in their groups of 5-6. Most of our work in this first rotation centers around developing original ideas and theories about our books, finding text evidence to support our thinking, and being able to sustain a conversation around our ideas with our club members.
Each month I will be sending Scholastic Book Order forms home with our 5th graders. This is an optional opportunity for your family to purchase books at a lower price than a traditional bookstore. Buying books through Scholastic also earns our classroom points to buy some awesome new books for the classroom library.
If you are interested in purchasing books through the book order, you can fill out the order form and send cash to school, or you can order and pay electronically at Scholastic Book Clubs (Parents)
Yokom Class code: QD2R3
Let me know if you have any questions about book orders!
To start off the year, we are building vocabulary knowledge and routines using Flocabulary. Every two weeks students get a new list of words and listen to a corresponding song using the words in context. We use the vocabulary words for a variety of in-class activities, and take a multiple-choice quiz at the end the two week period.
We are working on our first short writing project of the year, writing our own Tall Tales. We read some examples as a class, and now students are working on their own exaggerated stories.
