*2 or more semester practicum experience

Being a field educator for social work interns is a rewarding and challenging experience. It provides an opportunity to help interns learn, grow, and gain valuable professional skills. As a field educator, I strive to guide interns through their learning journey as they transition into professional social work practitioners.

My role is to foster interns' professional and personal development while they are learning experiences in the field. I provide supportive guidance while teaching interns the skills, values and knowledge needed to become successful in their profession. I act as a mentor and role model in teaching interns the methods of practice expected for a professional social worker.

I observe interns as they work with clients, both in and outside of the office, assessing their skills and providing feedback. I provide instruction on topics such as working with clients and their families, interviewing techniques, documentation, and ethical considerations. I nurture interns' understanding of the psychosocial aspects of the client's experience, helping interns make informed decisions in relation to social work ethical standards.

As the mentor, I provide oversight and support throughout the internship process. I facilitate educational opportunities to deepen knowledge of the industry. I attend field visits with interns where I evaluate and provide feedback on their practice. I assess their progress and give advice on how they can improve. I help interns identify professional goals, develop advanced skills, and reflect on their progress.

Being a field educator for social work interns is demanding, yet incredibly rewarding. It is a job where I can personally witness the interns’ growth and skill development. It is a personally fulfilling experience to see the interns take something from the classroom to real-world experience. Further, I feel a great sense of pride in knowing that I have positively impacted the development of an individual practitioner and future leader in social work. -Carmaletta Zandi.

Macrocare Practicum Program:

*1 semester intensive practicum

*Focus mostly on the importance of promoting the care of children, child nutrition, and child overall well-being.

The Macrocare internship program, is a collaborative project started by the Morlock Foundation, is designed to strengthen communities through macro practice, client support advocacy, and peer support. Students actively engage in macro-focused interventions to address social issues projects and contribute to the development of innovative solutions which often focus on the importance of promoting the care of children, child nutrition, and child overall well-being.

One such initiative is the Amberleña Kincare project, a collaboration between students and the Morlock Foundation. This project aims to create a comprehensive system that allows parents to assign temporary or permanent guardianship in cases of emergency or death. By utilizing macro practice skills, students work towards developing policies, procedures, and legal frameworks that ensure the well-being and stability of children during challenging times.

Another important aspect of the program is the Breaking the Cycle project. Through macro practice interventions, students focus on finding effective ways for children who face difficulties in primary school to obtain a General Educational Diploma (GED). This diploma serves as a stepping stone to college, eliminating the need for expensive placement classes and providing equal opportunities for all students.

By incorporating macro practice into these initiatives, the Macrocare internship program empowers students to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and communities. It fosters a sense of social responsibility, promotes resilience, and equips students with the necessary skills to address systemic issues and create positive change.
