In this lecture, the focus will be on the critical role of documentation in heritage conservation, highlighting its importance in analyzing and interpreting Cultural Heritage Values (CHV) and preparing effective conservation and management plans. Accurate documentation forms the foundation for understanding a heritage building’s condition, materials, and historical transformations, making it essential for any conservation work.
Participants will be introduced to the principles of architectural and structural documentation for heritage buildings, learning the key steps in capturing precise and relevant information. The lecture will combine theory and practice, covering various tools and techniques for gathering data, including drawings, photographs, and surveys. A step-by-step process for architectural documentation will be presented, followed by an in-depth explanation of structural documentation works. The session aims to equip participants with the skills necessary to accurately record the physical characteristics of heritage buildings, ensuring that all critical aspects are preserved for future conservation and restoration efforts.

This guest lecture will present international best practices in the digital documentation of heritage buildings, focusing on the innovative methods and technologies used globally. Participants will explore how digital tools are applied to accurately record and preserve historical structures. The lecture will cover the integration of digital documentation into conservation workflows, emphasizing its role in enhancing the accuracy of heritage surveys, supporting damage assessments, and improving preservation efforts. Special attention will be given to how these practices can be adapted to Bhutan’s unique heritage conservation needs.
