New Beginnings
The SIR programme is a uniquely Springfield programme designed and customised to provide the students with holistic and purposeful embarkation for the new academic year. It will cover major components of academic learning, information technology engagement, positive classroom culture and personal, emotional and social well-being. The students went through a series of hands-on, team-based and interactive activities as they learnt to build positive bonds in the classroom, develop good habits and routines and strengthen their personal competencies. The students worked closely with the class form teacher to forge a class identity, set daily norms and establish valuable peer relationships. For the Sec 1 cohort, the orientation-based activities were incorporated into the SIR to support the students moving into a new learning environment.
For the Secondary 1 students, the idea of starting fresh at a new school was rather unnerving and many of the students were afraid of not being able to make friends. However, after a few days of getting used to a new school, Surya Matthew Hart of Sec 1C shared that the SIR programme had helped him adjust to Springfield as he made new friends and learnt the school rules. Also, the Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Orientation helped many students find out which CCA they were interested in joining and what each CCA had to offer.
Many of the Secondary 3 students who were separated from their classes found it rather tough to get into a totally new classroom environment with new classmates and a new set of teachers. When asked about each individual's feelings on being in a new class as a Secondary 3 student, many were either nervous or anxious.
Dinie Erina, who is emplaced in Secondary 3E shared that,
“Being in a new class was daunting as I didn’t know what to expect and didn't have full confidence if I could adapt to the new surroundings. However, the SIR programme and activities that were prepared by the school eased all her worries away.”
This programme has further helped her in creating bonds and building bridges to forge new friendships with her classmates and teachers.
For the graduating cohort, what was utmost in their minds was their respective National Exams. Many were nervous while others were excited about creating some great memories with their schoolmates. Most resolved to work harder to prepare themselves for the exams.
Teo Ai Ru of Secondary 4A shared,
“My goal for this year is to get a distinction for my ‘N’ levels and to be able to enter the PFP (Poly Foundation Programme).”
For the Secondary 4 students, the SIR Programme had helped to give them good tips on how to study for their examinations and the differences in the different post-secondary options they were going to pursue in the future once they left for tertiary education.
