SFSS celebrated the nation’s 56th National Day with a difference. This year’s theme is, “Together, the Singapore Spirit” was more poignant as individual classes celebrated the nation’s birthday separately but were united as one in spirit.
Most classes started with the observance ceremony performed by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Uniformed Group. Decked in their well-pressed uniforms, the cadets stood and marched proudly in front of the whole school. This was then followed by the National Day message from the Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing who highlighted the fact that although the pandemic brought challenges to the nation, “it also brought out the best in us.”
Amongst the activities for the day, was the Humanities department project. The Social Studies Unit in collaboration with our Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) committee planned a special project-based lesson for all Sec 1 to 3 students. The lessons were conducted during History (Sec 1), Geography (Sec 2), and Social Studies (Sec 3) lessons. The objectives were to appreciate Singapore’s culturally diverse society, understand and appreciate the importance of mutual respect, and understanding. Despite our differences, Singapore - or more so Singaporeans - can draw strength from the unique identity and shared experiences that we all share. Some notable projects included posters and moving images to celebrate Singapore’s diversity.
The day’s activities culminated in the cup song which was drummed throughout the whole school virtually. It was initiated by music teacher Ms Lim Jia Jing and led by Ms Shermin Chee. The powerful rhythm resonated throughout the whole school as the lyrics of the song highlighted the uncertainty of the road ahead but the strength in numbers and the unity of the nation will pull us through challenging times. Megan Wong of Sec 3G shared,
“I felt the powerful lyrics of the song. It has been two years of uncertainty but somehow the country has thrived.”

The staff was also not left out from the celebrations. SFSS Staff Well-Being Committee (SWBC) took the staff on the road down memory lane with sweet and memorable treats representative of the nation. Mr Ong Kang Sheng, a Mathematics teacher and Form Teacher of Sec 3A shared that,
“These treats surely reminded me of my childhood days where I would pluck out the gems just for a taste of the candy-coated topping. It was a wonderful day to end the school celebration.”

Let's salute our martyrs for the sacrifices they made and appreciate them for giving us today. Through this hard time in the pandemic, I realised a lot of things but most of all, we should all be grateful that we are in this fight together as one and we have each other’s back always. I wish Singapore a happy National Day and always be living in happiness and prosperity. :))
