BY REIMAGINING A POST-COVID WORLD
Some of our students have taken part in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2021 and have won the Gold and Bronze awards. This year’s competition centred on the theme of “Community in the Commonwealth”which focuses on the current pandemic. Byrdene Teo won the Gold Award for imagining a world beyond the covid. Her story adopted a dystopian flick exploring the chaos and death which ravaged the world. Our Bronze winners also told stories of the impact of the pandemic and its legacy.
Two of our Science Research Teams presented their findings at the East Zone A*STAR Science Fair 2021 and one of the teams, working on the research project ‘Investigating Optimal Practices for School Wipe-down Routine’ won the Gold Medal in the Upper Secondary (East Zone) category. From Secondary 3G, the team members are Nur Adiibah Bte Roszalee, Denise Wu, Vo Phi Yen and Teo Chin Hyu Byrdene, with Mohd Farhan and Celynn Lee as their Research Mentors.
FOUR of our students participated in the Engineering Olympiad 2021 organised by Temasek Polytechnic. This activity is part of the Engineering Scholarship offered to our students who display a passion towards engineering.
A team of Secondary 2 students participated in the Historical Scene Investigation (HSI) Challenge 2021 organised by the National Library Board (NLB) and CPDD Humanities Branch in August this year and clinched the Silver Award. The team had to ‘Identify and explain how a historical event led to changes in Singapore’s natural environment between 1819 to 1945.’ Through a written report, they presented their findings on how the British and Japanese collaborated to preserve Singapore Botanical Gardens during World War Two.
12 students from our Normal Academic and Normal Technical streams participated in the All Singapore Secondary Mathematics Competition for Normal Course Students 2021 (ASMC 2021) co-organised by Clementi Town Secondary School & ACE Learning. Students were expected to solve as many higher order mathematics questions as possible in the given hour. NUR AIN BINTE YAHYA from 2D emerged as a winner among 766 participants from 76 Secondary Schools. Ain is ranked 13th in the Lower Secondary Normal Technical Category.
Based on the schools submissions, schools are recognised for their environmental efforts in alignment with the Singapore Green Plan 2030. This year, Springfield Secondary School has been awarded the: Vanda Miss Joaquim Sustained Achievement Award, only achievable with the third consecutive “Vanda Miss Joaquim” Award.
TEN of our students participated in the Ngee Ann Secondary Model United Nations (NASMUN’21) competition to debate the issue of global plastic pollution. Students had to research on their assigned country, write a position paper (or a press statement), and subsequently present their views and give speeches in a formal debate setting. They then had to work together with students from the different schools to draft a resolution paper.
Team Springfield clinched 4 different awards.
NCC is celebrating their 120th Anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, NCC has organised the NCC120 Creative Video Campaign Competition. This provided an opportunity for cadets to apply their skills while exploring their creativity to produce a video that is aligned to the theme for their Anniversary Celebrations.
Under the guidance of their NCC cadet teacher, Mr. Ng Choon Hwee, our SFSS NCC cadets videoed their way through to the 1st prize in celebrating the NCC core values as well as their time in the CCA.
Our Sec 3 Design & Technology (D&T) students - Nafil Bin Md. Saus, Md. Rifqi Bin Md. Ridzuan and Md. Izwan Bin Iswandy clinched the Silver Award in the Rapid Transit Radio Communications Category for the IgnITE Skills Challenge 2021 under the guidance of their teacher, Mr Murphy Chew.
