“One Team, One Dream”. That’s the team slogan that kept the Springfield Floorball Team going amidst the cancellation of the National School Games (NSG).
Student-athletes continued to motivate themselves through meaningful interactions during their e-CCA sessions and challenged themselves through disciplined home-based self-training programmes. In school, they trained and practised thrice weekly to ensure their tactical skills continue to be honed as part of being a student-athlete.
“The training sessions have instilled in the team a sense of belonging and resilience in facing challenges. We are excited about the journey ahead of us no matter the situation, because we are in this together as a team, sharing and trying our best to realise the same dream, ” shared Yip Tin Si, ,Secondary 4E, Floorball (Girls) Captain.

Both the B and C division inter-school competitions were cancelled due to the Pandemic but our boys trained with all of their hearts in hopes that they will be able to compete next year. Our aim still remains - to reach the top 4 Floorball teams in the NSG. Although it was difficult to change to online training at first, we managed to swiftly adapt to the different training methods and continue with our training.
Alaqmar Sabbir Topiwalla, from Sec 3F and member of the B Division Boys’ team said that,
"With the Pandemic ongoing, we were required to abide by the new measures that were implemented. It included the safe distancing measures and the 5 person per group rule. It was really challenging for me at first as our CCA requires contact with one another. Fun 5-vs-5 matches became boring and slow 1-vs-1 matches. However, through this, I persevered to learn how to look at things from a different perspective. This whole Pandemic taught me how to be more positive and to look forward to better days ahead."

Earlier this year, despite the uncertainty of Covid-19, Springfield’s ‘B’ Division Football boys continued to train and prepare for any news regarding the National School Games (NSG) for Football. When the NSG was cancelled, the team continued to train.
One of the highlights of this year’s Football CCA program was the Football Intra-CCA 4-a-side Competition in 2021. This was organised by the football teachers for the Secondary 3 and 4 ‘B’ Division boys. This competition allowed many to showcase their skills in a fun and competitive way. They battled each other in small groups of four, playing in a league until they reached the final round. After the competition, no one was left empty-handed as each individual received a prize for participation, as well as the winners of the competition. The gifts were thoughtful and football oriented such as cool drinks, sports water bottles, shoe bags, and finally a soccer ball for each of the winners.

Netball training continued despite the fact that there were no competitions. Be it face to face or e-sessions, we would always try our best to attend every CCA and we could continue to strive for full attendance. During e-CCA sessions, we would work on our fitness by targeting our core, arms and legs. This helps us to be more prepared as it will allow us to jump higher which is a key to becoming a good netball player. During face-to-face sessions, we would run rounds around the netball court to increase our stamina and do ball drills that would help to improve our catching skills. We, netballers have learned how to be more resilient and would always persevere no matter how fatigued we are. Since netball is a game that requires teamwork, we have also learnt how to cooperate and communicate with each other during games.
“The March holidays two-day netball camp was held in school and through it, we have learnt to be more patient and understanding towards our peers and CCA members knowing that everyone was extremely excited when it comes to playing games,” mentioned Carlyn Chua, Secondary 3G, Vice-Captain Netball (Girls).

Upholding the National Schools Bouldering Championship title is the goal of every Springfield climber as the school has held the title for the past five years. This was no longer possible when the competitions were put on hold. However, the Springfielders did not let this bring them down.
“OPC’s mission is to develop leaders of substance with the values of responsibility, compassion, integrity and perseverance. We should aim to be a better version of ourselves in every training, not for the glory but for the very fact that it is a privilege to be here.”
This was the Outdoor Pursuits Club (OPC) Captain, Jeff Oh of Secondary 4F, answer when asked about how his CCA coped with such changes. The OPC seniors took on the challenge and kept themselves motivated by shifting their focus from maintaining the national title to elevating their love for the sport. They stepped up accountability to develop each other and help their juniors grow and improve.

The announcement of the inclusion of the Taekwondo (Poomsae) in the National School Games (NSG) this year was welcomed with great anticipation by the Springfield Taekwondo Team. The students knew that the journey of preparation was not going to be easy, but resilience and diligence pushed them to train harder to hone the requisite Poomsae skills. Not only did they ready themselves for the NSG, but they also developed valuable mental tenacity that will guide them for life. Captain of the Taekwondo Team, Deandra D’Cruz of Sec (Secondary 3G) shared that
“I learnt valuable lessons in this journey towards the National School Games (NSG). Taekwondo is not just about kicks and punches but about cultivating sportsmanship and strong moral character.”
