Multiculturalism is part of the Singapore identity and every 21st July, we would celebrate Racial Harmony Day. Students of different races interact with one another every other day but during Racial Harmony, students engage in deeper conversations about racial issues. This year, it was no different as students were encouraged to dress up in ethnic costumes to school for the celebrations. Students came clad in their ethnic costumes, buzzing with energy and excitement as they marvelled and complimented one another on this special occasion.
During CCE lesson, the form teachers facilitated students about issues that have surfaced in the society. The students had honest conversations about their experiences with racism in Singapore. Nabil from 3E managed to share his experience with the class and was glad to bring light to the situation as he was the voice of the minority. Harold from 3E states that he has now become more aware of underlying racism and microaggression and will do his part not to perpetuate any stereotypes. “I believe at the end of the day, we are all no different from one another as we are all humans, and all we need is to respect and love one another.”
Harold being new to Singapore was delighted to take part in such an event, “a friend of mine had lent me clothes to wear which was amazing and it was a new experience for me to learn about other cultures”. Nabil mentioned that “I felt proud and happy since I was able to wear my traditional clothes to school so that people of other cultures could see what we wear during our celebrations”. It is indeed important to expose ourselves to these different cultures and to see our young ones donning their ethnic costumes with pride.
