Despite not being able to take part in GBHQ events this year due to the pandemic, our girls showed their resilience and resourcefulness in taking part in various virtual activities. Our senior girls took part in the annual GB leadership conference via Zoom, where they listened to the inspirational stories of exceptional women who were pioneers in their own field. In school, the girls continued to show their heart of service through raising awareness for mental health. By taking part in the annual Low Guat Tin Challenge organized by GBHQ, they created artefacts such as poems and artwork that aim to reduce the stigma attached to mental illnesses in Singapore.
Boys’ Brigade (BB) - Displaying true leadership amidst a crisis
by Chua Kee Hon, Secondary 3C, Captain of the Boys’ Brigade
Due to the safe management measures, many of our high key events such as BB Blaze, and annual adventure race were cancelled. Despite these setbacks, we soldiered on with various online and in-person lessons. The lessons included various skills such as first aid, map reading, knots and lashing and BB knowledge. Through these activities, I was able to display my leadership in guiding the juniors to complete the task and stay focused during the lessons. It also taught me how to manage them through online means as we were not able to have much physical CCA sessions. We were also tested physically through weekly fitness challenges that we would complete in our own time. This proved challenging as we had to be disciplined to put time aside for the exercises. When asked to cum up what 2021 has been for BB, Chua Kee Hon, Secondary 3C, Captain of the Boys’ Brigade shared that,
“In conclusion, 2021 has been a challenging year, but I have hope that in 2022, we can enjoy the various outdoor activities that Boys’ Brigade has to offer.”

The National Cadet Corps’ (NCC) mission is to nurture inspiring leaders and committed citizens through fun, adventurous and military-related activities. It is considered to be a precursor to National Service. Similar to National Service, the NCC places a heavy emphasis on values such as discipline, integrity, and camaraderie. The NCC strives to inculcate such values in the formative years of cadets so that they would be able to perform their National Service with greater aptitude and ability. Besides values, the NCC also provides cadets with opportunities to experience NS life through its many camps. For instance, in Camp STEEL, Secondary 2 cadets get the opportunity to hone their leadership skills and experience using the SAR-21 rifle firsthand. STEEL stands for Standards, Tenacity, Emotional Intelligence, Energy, and Leadership.

“Ever since I was young, I have always feared National Service as I felt that I would fall behind my peers in performance as I felt that the time given to prepare was minimal at best. NCC has changed my perception of the National Service entirely. After experiencing many camps and participating in many military-related activities, I feel exponentially more confident in my abilities and more patriotic as the brotherhood and camaraderie I’ve experienced during my time in NCC is incomparable.”

The goal of NPCC is to guide the students to be confident, outgoing and disciplined. The various courses given to cadets help them grow as an individual, and teaches them life skills such as teamwork and resilience. Programmes such as annual camps, parades, drill and campcraft competitions, weapons training as well as volunteer work has taught each and everyone of them to be more resilient, and to respect and accept each other’s differences. As they work towards becoming men and women of character, the students have forged life-long bonds with their fellow squadmates.
Each course attended is essential in shaping their journey as cadets. With each newly attained badge, they continue to improve themselves to become active citizens of the community. The clear path of progression and ranking system within the UG provides them with an end goal in mind, spurring them to achieve greater heights.
