Denise Wu, from Secondary 3G, who is also the school’s Band Major
When the Band was told they were participating in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) competition this year, the members had mixed feelings about it. Majority of the band members were nervous but there were some who were excited. The band members knew practice was going to be vigorous and the sessions would be more strict, but with resilience and diligence, they were up for the challenge. This was not just a test of playing perfect music for the judges, but also a test of how the Band members would manage their anxiety as a team. Overcoming anxiety is a beneficial life skill that the team has learnt to develop whenever the pressure is on them over the course of the SYF journey. Denise Wu, from Secondary 3G, who is also the school’s Band Major shared that,
“It was a very interesting experience, despite the current pandemic affecting the performance where we had to adhere to the social distancing measures of being one metre apart, the band was still able to play the pieces flawlessly.”
by Erina Rifki , Secondary 3E, Leader
The new normal that came with Covid 19 was challenging for the Dance Club. It was an uphill task to practice and perform as a group in preparation for the SYF competition. However, the challenges were overcome with the new technology that came with covid 19. Throughout phase 1 to phase 3, the dance troupe did their best via zoom sessions first and then later practised in smaller groups, face to face. They took the obstacles that they faced with great determination and persevered amidst Covid 19. Though Covid 19 was a setback, it did not dampen their spirit to achieve nor discourage their burning passion. This continued right through to the SYF competition. As a leader, Erina Rifki said, “ I will continue to motivate my juniors to display the courage and resilience to keep dancing. As a team, we had fun and will continue to strive for excellence.”

“We have gone on to achieve greater success by leveraging on the challenges we faced. At first, we were worried about how to conduct our CCA when we had to limit sizes due to Covid measures. Instead, we saw this as an opportunity to create two teams, one for SYF and one to make our own original short films. This was such a success that even after SYF, we went on to create short films of our own for Teacher’s Day and National Day, for the first time!”
by Nur Adillah, Secondary 3C), President of Drama Club
“Of course, who can forget our incredible achievement of achieving Distinction for this year’s Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation as well? We felt that it was because we had to be extra conscious of our positions and voice due to Covid measures, that made us put in the effort to overcome them. Also, unlike previous years, there was also less pressure since there was no audience. Although it was tough having to adapt to the changing rules and to live through the uncertainty of Covid, we are glad that our sacrifice and diligence paid off.”
by Alicia Yong, Secondary 3G, Chairperson for Guzheng Ensemble

Any student with a passion for the CCA and is willing to put in your best in the pursuit of excellence, will be given a chance.
It is no wonder that the pandemic never deterred the members from attending practices according to staggered schedules. The ensemble members grew as performers and worked with great diligence and determination for the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF AP). They turned up and exuded positive mindfulness, delighting the adjudicators and online audience, bringing home the very first Distinction Award in the history of Springfield Guzheng Ensemble.
