The Swiss Cottage Chinese Orchestra provided many opportunities for our orchestra members to develop their musical skill and values. They were able to persevere through the intensive training in Semester 1 even though there was limited period of time to practice. Not forgetting that they also had to balance their time between studies and the practices. Our conductor chose a challenging song 觅 as a choice piece and our members managed to rise to the occasion and put up a resounding performance! As a result, the orchestra was awarded the certificate of Distinction at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation in 2019.
Last year, our orchestra performed 城里的月光 and Libertango at a dinner at Roxy Group’s “Sharing and Caring for Families” dinner. The exotic Libertango, composed by Astro Piazzola, offered an unexpected Argentinian twist for the audience who were totally immersed by the beautiful rendition, featuring the Chinese Orchestra instruments and the Cajon. Kudos to the Chinese Orchestra for their Dare to Try spirit!
Our members had also exhibited Empathy when they taught the Primary 4 and 5 orchestra members from Princess Elizabeth Primary School. During the process of mentoring, our members learnt to be patient and encouraging towards the primary school juniors. They also learnt to be more understanding and polite towards each other during their interactions.
And this is the CO spirit - “Our Music, Our Joy”!
