English Drama

English Drama CCA develops in our students the ability to communicate their ideas be it through the language, the use of space or movement. It is about the ability to respond creatively and confidently to a variety of stimuli, encouraging the use of imagination and sensitivity to their surroundings as they gain skills and experience in drama and theatrical performances.

Often the focus is on learning theatrical skills in a communal environment. As they work together, they also realise the importance of working as an ensemble and understand that every role is crucial, whether on or off-stage.

Through devising and acting, students learn to express their ideas and feelings in a theatrical context. English Drama believes in giving students part directorship over their productions, with every student taking on on-stage and off-stage roles. Members are constantly challenged to step out of their comfort zone, think on their feet, and cultivate their spirit of initiative and innovation

English Drama rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1515-1815.

(Friday rehearsals only during concert preparation)

2023 CCA Experience

Here is a snippet of the students’ experience in their CCA in 2023.

2023 has been a fresh year of opportunity and challenges for English Drama. As a Performing Arts CCA, one of our biggest hurdles this year was the biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation in April, followed soon after by the SCGS Performing Arts Festival in May. Preparing the same play at two different platforms in succession posed challenges - we had to grapple with the demanding assessment criteria, managing the large size of the ensemble performers as well as finer details such as timbre constraints. However, our drama instructor Ms Keat’s creative direction and guidance, coupled with our dedicated efforts, allowed us to deliver performances to the best of our ability.

In July, the Secondary 3 drama members took part in the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Comic Duologue and Monologue competition. Nicole Tan (Sec 3PR) clinched First Place in the Comic Monologue (Senior Category), while in the Comic Duologue (Senior Category), two SCGS pairs swept the top positions: Davinia Koh (Sec 3CO) and Natalie Olby (Sec 3GR) emerged champions, while Prittika Ganesan (Sec 3GY) and Sumaya Zabiullah (Sec 3GR) emerged runners-up. We are immensely proud of the hard work and effort the Secondary 3 members put into preparing for this competition and the fruitful outcome.

English Drama had the chance to collaborate with Chinese Drama to put up separate performance items for both Teachers’ Day in August as well as Secondary 4 Prom Night in November. Both were great learning experiences which helped all members involved to grow and mature in their acting skills, as we learnt from our peers. We are elated with the performances we put on for our audiences and are grateful for these opportunities.

Though this may be the epilogue of our 2023 story, it is only the beginning of a brand new chapter of 2024. With a new set of interesting and power-packed performances coming up next year, we hope to continue to leave our shining legacy on stage and in the history of English Drama!
