What this KAT is for
Reach for this when students need structured support to access a task that would otherwise be beyond them — sentence starters for a discussion, hints in a quiz, worked-example reveals for a Math problem, vocabulary glossaries inside a 华文 reading. A scaffold makes the thinking visible while students need it, then fades as they internalise the move.
Familiar examples: a P3 boy who knows the answer but doesn’t have the sentence structure to say it aloud in Mandarin; a P4 student who could solve the Math word problem if only he could see one worked step; a P5 student who freezes at an open-ended Science question because she doesn’t know how to begin. Technology lets you embed the support inside the task so students reach for it only when they need it.
MOE defintion:
Allow teachers to embed digital scaffolds to support thinking and guide interactions between students, teachers, and content.
How to choose a tool for Scaffolding
Not every supportive feature is a Scaffold in the KAT sense. A textbook glossary is helpful, but it doesn’t fade. To shift students towards independence, a tool needs to do at least one of these three things:

Make the thinking visible
A sentence starter, a worked-example step, a writing frame, an Interactive Thinking Tool. The scaffold shows students what good reasoning looks like, not just what good answers are.
2 Signal 02 · Right-time support
Available when needed, not before
Hints appear on a wrong attempt. Glossary opens on click. Worked examples unlock after the student tries. Help arrives at the moment of struggle, not handed out by default.
3 Signal 03 · Built to fade
Designed for removal
The strongest scaffold is one the student outgrows. The tool should make it easy to dial back support over a unit — fewer hints, shorter sentence frames, eventual removal.

Design tips
Plan the fade from day one. A scaffold that never goes away becomes a crutch. Sketch the four-week arc: full scaffold → partial → student-generated → none.
Make the scaffold visible to students. Tell them: "this hint is here today, but next lesson you’ll do this without it." Naming the fade makes it real.
Differentiate the scaffold, not the task. Two students can do the same task with different levels of support. Tiering scaffolds is usually fairer than tiering work.
Right-time, not all-time. A glossary that’s always open is wallpaper. A glossary that opens on click is a scaffold.
Beware over-scaffolding the strong. Sentence frames help struggling writers; for fluent writers, they can flatten voice. Make the frame optional.
