What this KAT is for
Reach for this when you want students to think about their own thinking — to plan, monitor, and reflect on their learning, not just complete the task in front of them. Metacognition is what turns a student who can do today's sum into a student who can tackle a different sum tomorrow without help.
Familiar examples: a P4 boy who gets the right answer but has no idea how he got there, so can't do the next problem; a P3 student who hands in her composition without re-reading it; a P5 student who keeps repeating the same misconception because she's never paused to notice the pattern. Technology can prompt the reflection at the right moment and capture it over time.
MOE defintion:
Allowing students to make sense of and regulate their learning activities/processes and knowledge through provision of automated supports, and articulate their reflection through various modes.
How to choose a tool
Stickers and points are motivation in the shallowest sense. They produce short-term compliance, not durable engagement. To do real Motivation work, the tool needs to do at least one of these three things:
1 Signal 01 · Right moment
Prompt at the point of struggle
Not at the end of the lesson when energy is low — but during a task: "Why did you pick that strategy?" "What will you try next?"
2 Signal 02 · Make thinking external
Force articulation
A reflection that stays in the student's head doesn't shift their learning. The tool should make them write, record, or draw their thinking so they can look at it.
3 Signal 03 · Build a track record
Across time, not just today
A single reflection is interesting; a series of reflections is a learning trajectory. The tool should let students look back at how their thinking has changed.
