What this KAT is for
Reach for this when engagement is the bottleneck — when the learning is sound but students don't yet care enough to do it well. Technology can offer authentic audiences, real-world tasks, choice, and the kind of timely positive feedback that builds persistence.
Familiar examples: a P4 class who treat composition as a chore — until they find out it'll be published on a parent-facing class blog; a P3 boy who avoids oral practice in class but records eight takes on snorkl; a Math task that suddenly feels worth doing because the result becomes a graph the class will see. The goal isn't entertainment — it's meaning.
MOE defintion:
Allow teachers to provide meaningful tasks, choice and support to encourage students to take ownership of and persist in their learning.
How to choose a tool
Stickers and points are motivation in the shallowest sense. They produce short-term compliance, not durable engagement. To do real Motivation work, the tool needs to do at least one of these three things:
1 Signal 01 · Real audience
Work seen by someone who matters
Community group or the class wall. When students know a real person will read or watch their work, effort rises without rewards.
2 Signal 02 · Meaningful task
A purpose beyond the grade
Make something useful, solve a real problem, contribute to something larger than the worksheet. Students who can answer "why does this matter?" persist longer.
3 Signal 03 · Personal progress visible
Show the student their own growth
Not "you beat the class" — "look how far you've come since September." Self-referenced progress beats peer comparison every time.

Canva for Education Free — students produce polished, designer-quality artefacts — the quality itself is motivating.
