Motivation

What this KAT is for

Reach for this when engagement is the bottleneck — when the learning is sound but students don't yet care enough to do it well. Technology can offer authentic audiences, real-world tasks, choice, and the kind of timely positive feedback that builds persistence.

Familiar examples: a P4 class who treat composition as a chore — until they find out it'll be published on a parent-facing class blog; a P3 boy who avoids oral practice in class but records eight takes on snorkl; a Math task that suddenly feels worth doing because the result becomes a graph the class will see. The goal isn't entertainment — it's meaning.

MOE defintion: 

Allow teachers to provide meaningful tasks, choice and support to encourage students to take ownership of and persist in their learning.

How to choose a tool

Stickers and points are motivation in the shallowest sense. They produce short-term compliance, not durable engagement. To do real Motivation work, the tool needs to do at least one of these three things:

 1  Signal 01 ·  Real audience

Work seen by someone who matters

Community group or the class wall. When students know a real person will read or watch their work, effort rises without rewards.


 2  Signal 02 ·  Meaningful task

A purpose beyond the grade

Make something useful, solve a real problem, contribute to something larger than the worksheet. Students who can answer "why does this matter?" persist longer.


 3  Signal 03 ·  Personal progress visible

Show the student their own growth

Not "you beat the class" — "look how far you've come since September." Self-referenced progress beats peer comparison every time.

Across all subjects:

  • Canva for Education Free — students produce polished, designer-quality artefacts — the quality itself is motivating.

  • Soundtrap Free — collaborative music creation — students perform or share original compositions.

  • BandLab Free  — students produce and share original music — real audience via public profile.

  • Craiyon Norms Free  — AI image generation for creative projects — students generate images to illustrate their writing or presentations. Requires AIEd module completion and teacher pre-vetting of outputs.


 SLS native   

  • SLS publishing to class gallery  MOE— students share completed work; the gallery becomes the real audience.

  • SLS gamified components (badges, levels)  MOE — use sparingly and with purpose — best for fluency practice, not for deep learning.

  • SLS progress visualisations  MOE  — students see their personal practice trajectory — concrete proof of growth.

  • SLS rubrics for specific feedback  MOE  — targeted feedback that names what the student did well — beats generic "well done."

English Language:

  • Class blog (Padlet or Google Sites) Free — students publish best writing for a parent / peer audience; authentic comments come back.

  • Canva for Education  Free — students publish a polished infographic or digital poster — the finish quality is itself motivating.

  • Curipod Norms Free — AI-generated interactive lesson starters — word clouds, open questions, and polls that give every student's idea a public face.

Chinese Language:

  • Class blog of best 作文 (Padlet or Google Sites)  Free — parent-facing — students write differently when they know parents will read.

Mathematics:

  • Real-world data investigations in SLS MOE — Singapore weather data, MRT ridership, school canteen prices — Math with stakes.

  • Maths challenges with personal-best tracking  Free  — rank against yourself last week, not against the top student in class.

Science: 

  • "Explain it to a P1 student" video projects Free — real audience (the actual P1 class) — students simplify, which is the hardest cognitive work.

  • Class science blog or newsletter Free — students publish experiments and findings for a parent audience.

  • Teachable Machine Free — students train a simple ML model (gesture, image, or sound recognition) — building something that works is powerfully motivating.
