The Hazelwood Green is a 174-acre master planned community that is located in Allegheny county in Pennsylvania. The site is positioned along the Monongahela River and provides views of the surrounding mountains and the city of Pittsburgh. The site is rich in industrial history and was once the location of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Company. The sites terrain and riverfront views allow people of all ages the opportunity to explore and enjoy the amenities the property has to offer. Hazelwood has the potential to supply a variety of programmed elements that will provide seasonal interests to travelers and community members. The Hazelwood master plan will act as a mixed-use development, incorporating public spaces, parks, commercial, retail, and residential real estate.

The Hazelwood Green is a 174 acre site that operated as an industrial site for years. Up until the 1950s, the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company built their first plants along the river in Hazelwood and in South Side. During the decline of the steel industry the Ling-Temco Vought Incorporation purchased the site in 1974 which led to the close of the plant in 1997. In 2002, Almono LP purchased the site for $10 million and the land was set aside for a redevelopment vision. From the purchase of the site in 2002 studies, environmental remediation, and site prep occurred on the site. In 2016, the site was rebranded as the Hazelwood Green and was publicly opened in April of 2019. The Hazelwood Green masterplan aims to honor and highlight the site's valuable industrial history throughout the project.

The existing plan for the Hazelwood Green focuses on four principles: advance human well being, inspire innovation, regenerate the ecology, and create resilient places. The existing Hazelwood plan divided the Hazelwood green into three districts: the Mill District, the Flats District, and the River District. The plan dedicates 30.6 (17% of the site) acres to urban open space and 98.2 acres to development.
Strengths
The pattern of human-scale streets and blocks create a variety of routes for pedestrians accessibility and movement
The parking structures are being built to be able to be re-purposed for future use
The grid like pattern mimics that of the existing structure of Hazelwood
Weaknesses
Could be improvement in the location of different urban areas to provide better connections to the surrounding neighborhood
The build to zone could be increased above the 6' requirement to provide more space for users

Utilize Hot Metal Bridge to connect a bike loop in the site
Lack of entrances restrict the site from the surrounding area
Utilize the existing views of the mountains, river, and city
Need to implement shaded areas for pedestrians
Piecing together and urban puzzle focuses on four main areas; history, neighborhood investments, linking assets, and ecology. The historical aspect highlights the industrial history of Hazelwood. Neighborhood investments focus on improving biking and pedestrian connections between residential communities, recreational opportunities, and jobs. Linking assets focus on connecting and creating equitable extensions to the community. Ecology focuses on implementing green infrastructure and establishing green spaces for users
