The Hazelwood Green is a brownfield site in Hazelwood of the grater Pittsburgh area. This area is complex and boast an abundance of history creating its own challenges. There are railroad tracks bordering the site making it feel secluded from the surrounding Hazelwood neighborhood. The area is great for recreation while the site does not cater to pedestrian access as it should.
Usable Space
This Space is Currently an open grass field That has potential for recreation or education.
River Views
There is incredible potential for a river trail along the site featuring a nice view.
Safety Issue
There are not crosswalks in this section of the site as well as no traffic calming present.
River Connections
There is ample possibility for connection to the river.
Character of Place
This site features many reused materials from its industrial history providing a post-industrial modern aesthetic.
Community
This site provides ample space for community connection.
Assessable Views
The flat nature of the space appeals to handicap accessibility with possible views and interpretive signs.
Pittsburgh is located in the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. The Topography and charter of the area varies from unban, urban forested, forested, flat, mild slopes, and steep slopes.
The Site is a flat compared to the surrounding areas of Pittsburgh and Hazelwood. This is an opportunity for better pedestrian friendliness; From Increased walkability, views, and better ADA Access.
The following maps are Heat Maps generated using Strava, which is a very popular phone app among recreators to track there activities. The maps are read using the Hot-Cold Scale in the the following image. Hot (reddish-orange) is where the most recreation occurs, whereas, Cold (Purplish-white) is the least amount of activity.
This heat map shows only the "hot spots" for runners near the site. This insight give clues as to what area this regions running population enjoy.
This heat map is cycling specific giving insight into what the cycling population look for when they go out on a ride.
The water recreation is more limited as it is a very seasonal sport mostly happens on the Allegheny river north of the site.
These maps show recreational activity "hot spots" in comparison to the land type and use. This allows for a more clear understanding of where recreator prefer to be. Based on this data it can be concluded that recreation is preferred on open green spaces, wooded spaces, and wider populated streets, excluding the downtown area.
The following are proposal made by another Landscape Architecture firm. Improvements on these proposals can be made in different ways which are highlighted in Phases 2-3.
